I am pretty sure that you would at least want to deactivate the airbag. The last thing you want is the bag opening on you. Other than that, shouldnt take you that long. I personally havent done this myself, but Im sure someone will chime in in a bit.

What does the steering wheels look like without radio controls?

yes most definitly take out the fuse for the air bag so it doesnt deploy when you try to detach it from the steering wheel and you are going to have to rent a steering wheel puller and depending on what type of wheel your putting on depends on the time i put on an aftermarket and the adapter plates and rewiring can take some time and be aggravating but well worth it. The last thing you wanna do if you put on a steering wheel with no airbag is to make abosoltue sure that wether its just the fuse or if you have to drop the interior pieces to uncouple the wiring thats directly above the pedals that it is done or when you turn on your ignition your wires for the air bag will ground and your steering column will smoke other than those need to know things its easy and quick
