Full Version: Kicker Midbass Speakers

My sail panel subs are blown (again!) and I'm looking for aftermarket replacements. I found out that Kicker makes a 4 ohm 6.75 inch midbass driver that should fit the opening. I know the factory one are dual voice coil so I'm not sure how to wire these using the factory amp. Is it possible? I know I saw the impedence of the factory speakers on a thread here one time, but I can't seem to find it. Does anybody know off the top of their heads?

I want to keep a little bass response in the car without any obvious or visible modifications, so I thought these would be a good compromise instead of spending the dough for another set of Monsoon's. I've heard that full range speakers sound terrible because of the built-in crossover in the Monsoon system, and that even the bass is minimal, and that's why I'm looking for midbass drivers. I still haven't found any DVC's, but if anyone knows of a good set, I'd be most appreciative for the info.

BTW, the ones I'm looking at are Kicker 04SSMB6, and range from $110-200 depending on where you get them, so the price is competitive with new factory speakers. What do you guys think? Good idea to try or not?

you can find all of the speaker/amp/head unit info on here .
Hope that helps,

P.S. I have a set of brand new 2005 Infinity Kappa full range speakers in my sail panels and it sounds a lot better than stock. If you want to make it sound real good, get a small 4 channel amp and a friend who has a free day who knows his car audio stuff and rewire the whole system to the amp. you'll be limited to 4 speakers, but it will sound a lot better than it will with just the speakers in there unamped. I'm actually going to be doing this myself on my car sometime soon, along with a custom woofer box in the trunk with two 12's. Good luck to you whatever you decide to do though.

i'm no longer using my factory amp and i was wondering if i could hook it up like a regular amp and use it to power aftermarket subs? if so how do i go about doing this? thanks

i too need new subs, mine were missing when i bought the car...anyways i was wondering if anyone could recommend some i could use to fit the spot and that uses the factory moonsoon amp wiring. im not wanting to spend more than like $70 for both of them so help...

Rich...thanks for the info and link..that actually helps answer some of my questions about the system. I have thought about doing an entire system reworking with multiple amps to drive speakers in their stock locations, but that's a project for sometime down the road after my performance mods are done and paid for.

ChaseHammer...if you want to use the factory wiring including connections, you'll have to get a set of factory speakers. As far as I know, noone makes a wiring harness for those speakers. I've never heard of the Goldwood brand, so I can't say anything about them, but I would steer clear of Pyramid unless you want to be buying a set every 6 months. In my younger days I destroyed 4 sets of Pyramid subs of varying sizes using amps that were well within their stated power handling ranges. Just remember, you get what you pay for. As for replacement stock speakers, there's a place by the name of Lambert's Auto Parts (sometimes on Ebay) located in Mississippi that sells used GM subs for $50 a pair shipped (or at least they did last year). If you want to go that route, PM me and I'll track down the phone #.

good place for car audio equipment is thezeb.com, they have a warranty on their products and they sell good stuff for cheap.

Chad - you could do the whole system with one small amp that has like 75-90 W RMS x 4. Most full range speakers only have a rating of around 75/85 W RMS and that one little amp could power 4 speakers and make it sound perfect. My cousin did this in his 95 camaro and he had the 2 speakers in the doors and the 2 speakers in the sail panels hooked up to it and his woofers in his trunk (on a seperate amp though), it sounds really good, everything is nice and clear. but like you said, it is a project, even with just one amp.

97formula808 - I dont see any reason you couldn't use the factory amp to power aftermarket subs, but you wouldnt be able to get much power out of it, so the bass would be minimal. you'd be better off buying something small like 2 200 W Woofers and an amp to match and put it in your trunk, it might not sound like much but if you wire it up right it'll sound good and it wont cost as much as you think it would.

chasehammer - I would have to agree with chad on the speakers, don't get either one of them. I got a set of 6.5" sony Xplods off eBay for like $50 shipped and a set of Xplod 6x9's for like $65 shipped. I installed them when I still had the stock head unit in there and ended up screwing them up a bit from blasting it too high repeatedly, but they still sound pretty good. Looking back on it I wish I had saved the money and just bought a set of Infinity Kappas which sound a hell of a lot better, but I got what I paid for. I'm kinda getting off track a bit, but if you want speakers for under $70, go with the sony's, not the pyramid or the other ones, they'll last a lot longer and sound a lot better.

I think I've done enough talking for one reply now, so I'm gonna shut up until someone else responds. lol.

Hope I could be of some assistance to everyone.

to be honest with you I'm not sure exactly, but looking on that site I posted before, they have a diagram of the wiring for the amp and I wouldnt even know where to begin on wiring it up to a set of aftermarket woofers. here is the diagram I'm talking about. usually amps are somewhat self explanatory, but this one is way to complex for me to even want to try to figure out, I wouldn't want to go through all of the wires and terminals only to make one small mistake and cost anybody else a lot of money.

One thing I was told is that you can buy a mono amp and hook up two woofers to it, but they have to have specific specs to work.
example:

2 woofers - 400 W RMS (pair) @ 4 OHMS (each)
Amp - 400 W RMS @ 2 OHMS

When you wire both woofers into the same terminals as if they were one, it will bring down the resistance to a 2 OHM level which would then give it 400 W RMS power. However, being that the resistance is lower, there is a little bit more of a chance of burning them out. minimal, but possible.

I may be wrong, I've had little to no sleep lately but I know there is a way you can beat the whole cost of amp/woofer setup and still have a nice system. You can always call up the people at Crutchfield and ask them for help, even if you're not buying from them, they're the most helpful people I've met so far without forcing their most expensive stuff on you.

If you have any more questions on any of this stuff or specific stuff I'm more than happy to help, and if I don't know it I know plenty of people that know a lot more than I do about this.

this is a good amp, it might loko cheap, but a friend of mine has this hooked up to a couple of JL audio woofers and it's the best sounding bass I've ever heard in my life. PM me or post on here if you want to find out more about it, if you're interested I'll ask him exactly what he did to make it sound so good.
