Let me start off by saying I had not even raced my car from a stop light let alone a drag strip. I had never floored 1st gear from a dead stop so you can imagine how my day went. I am really good at launching AWD cars, HOWEVER I am apparently not good at launching RWD cars. So I am looking for some advice. As your looking (and laughing) at my times, remember I don't claim to be able to get the car to move forward in 1st or second gear.

1st run I launch WAY to hard and first and second gear wear pointless.
60' 2.74
1/8 10.49
mph 75.79
1000 13.23
1/4 15.52
mph 98.4

The funny thing was, my brother in law in his EVO MR ran a 14.7 at 85.5 mph and stopped at the 1/8 mile. He had never drag raced before and he said he did not know where to stop.

2nd run I baby it out of the hole and never floor it until third.

60' 2.35
1/8 9.71
mph 77.57
1000 12.41
1/4 14.67
mph 99.86

3rd run all hell brakes loose

60' 2.96
1/8 11.56
mph 72.02
1000 14.39
1/4 16.75
mph 96.25

4th run I ease it out again

60' 2.37
1/8 9.49
mph 77.97
1000 12.18
1/4 14.4
mph 100.8

I was guessing a mid 14 performance and that is what I got. I think the car is capable of 13.9, but I will have to improve my launch. When I had decent results I launched at 3k and eased out, and then I would go about 3/4 throttle in second. but any pointers would help. blink.gif

get some sticky tires and hope the rearend doesn't snap.

Ah man. Those are some really bad times. But you can only improve from here on.

You have to get some sticky rubber. Slicks migth be overkill for the stock rear end on a hard launch. Get some Nittos, they should help you out alot.

When releasing the clutch, you have to find the sweet spot at which rpm to launch it. Rev the engine to 3000rpm and then when the light turns green slip the clutch out. Granted, this will KILL your clutch but will not break your tires that bad.

Now you see first hand the difference in driving a rear wheel drive vehicle as compared to an AWD.

Practice makes perfect. Also, a good suspension will help as well.

I agree, you need good rubber.

I take it the car is a 6M? I tach mine (with street tires) at around 2500 rpm and dump the clutch on the last yellow. As soon as it is almost hooked up I floor it. Street tires dont hook up that well with the manual transmission. With DR's I can tach it to almost 3500 rpm.

What is a good or decent time in my car. I have never seen a near stock 97 or less break 14 seconds. I would figure a low 14 or 13.9 would be all I could get out of my car on a good run??

Around 14 is about average for a stock/near stock LT1.

As for a near stock one breaking 14/13.9 it depends on what you consider near stock. With my 97 I've done it twice - 13.78 and 13.65 on nittos both times. All I had done at the time to it was: Magnaflow catback, airfoil, crank underdrive pulley, 3.42 gears and my aftermarket ram air hood. Otherwise everything else is stock with the engine/drivetrain, including the tune.

i got 13.99 with just a hooker catback and ram air. 2.73 gears, full weight (minus spare and jack but a rollbar added), O2 sensor going bad, street tires, and hit 100k miles on the drive home.
so yes it can be done.

Your car will easily break into the 13's..... just get the 60-ft down to 2.00 seconds or less, and you are there. You can figure about 1.5 10ths reduction in 1/4-mile time for each 1/10th reduction in 60-ft time. That would put your 4th run at 13.9 or better. The MPH is also high enough to indicate its a high 13-second car.

You have my sympathy, wrestling with the M6. I could never get good 60-ft times with my stock clutch and mildy modified engine. Too much clutch and it bogged, to much throttle and it spun like crazy. Seemed to be a matter of striking a balance between how fast you let the clutch out and how fast you put the throttle down.

Life gets easier with a beefy clutch (Street Twin), beefy rear axle (Strange 12-bolt) and really sticky tires (26x11.5-15 ET Streets)...... wind it up to 5,000rpm, and dump the clutch. And even easier with a TH400 smile.gif
