Full Version: disappointing day at the track

First off I have to thank SassySue for working the video camera while my dad and I raced.

I went to the track expecting to improve from last year where I ran a 15 flat. This was with the shifter not working right. Manually shifting my auto, it would skip 2nd gear. I got that fixed and thought I was going to get down in the 14s. WRONG.
My first race was against my dad in his 72 Stingray automatic with a big block 402 and 3.08 gears. (my car has 3.70 gears and a chevy 350) It was my dad's first time ever to run a car at the track so he didn't know how the tree worked. I guess I technically won because he red lighted but our times were:
Mine
R/T---- .382
60ft---- 2.182
330---- 6.324
1/8----- 10.022
mph---- 67.18
1000--- 13.117
1/4----- 15.669
mph---- 88.90

Dad
R/T----(-.192)
60ft----2.677
330----6.763
1/8-----10.043----mph-75.32
1000---12.841
1/4-----15.199----mph-95.43

That was the only time we got to go head to head. My second run got worse:

R/T----- .313
60ft----- 2.176
330----- 6.236
1/8----- 10.016----- mph- 60.44
1000---- 13.446
1/4------ 16.187---- mph- 83.42

When I shifted from 1st to 2nd, I thought I screwed up my tranny because the car just seemed to quit going. I let off the gas, shifted to 3rd and she weemed to run fine then. When I got back to Sue, she said my tires were spinning while I was in 1st and also after I hit second. She thought it was pretty funny that my small block was producing enough power to do that.

My third and final run

R/T----- .253
60ft----- 2.309
330----- 6.604
1/8----- 10.054---- mph- 72.23
1000--- 12.990
1/4----- 15.453---- mph- 91.73

I still can't believe my times were slower than last year. At any rate, I did learn I need better traction. I did get wheel hop on my last run but I think I just need better tires.

I got to drive the Stingray once. It's alot easier to drive than my car. All you have to do is push the gas to the floor because it won't spin the tires. Dad managed to get it to run a 14.6 and I got a 14.7

R/T----- .097
60ft----- 2.223
330----- 6.291
1/8----- 9.574---- mph- 75.57
1000---- 12.368
1/4----- 14.726--- mph- 95.32

One thing I did improve was my reaction time. Last year I had an r/t of .8 sec.
Well I guess I need to get rid of my Kelly Chargers and get some stickier tires.

Hey no problem taking the videos of the run with your dad and of both you and your dad individual runs and I'm glad that they all came out ok. It sure was sweet seeing both of the cars going down the track.

Yea it was funny seeing your tires spin. Next time you either need to air down the ones you have or you need to get some different ones.

Thats odd.One time I was at the track there was a 72 Vette with a 350 in it.It had headers but he said it was stock other than that.He ran 13.20's.

Dad's car is completely stock. It is also fully loaded with air conditioning, power windows, power steering, and power brakes.
It's also possible the car you saw was an LT-1. Those had the 350 but only had 15 less hp. With the LT-1 he could have had 3.55 or 3.73 gears in it too.
I would be very suprised if it was a plain 350 vette. Maybe I should have dad run his convertible 70 vette. It has a 350 and 4-speed.

For me, I think better traction would get my times down. Dad would have to change his gears.
