Hi guys

I just join your forum and read a lot of good things I thought I'd share too.
I just bought a 95 formula for $1500! Its has its problems there all electrical windows kinda work, temp sensor works sometimes if I hit the dash, alternater voltage needle keeps jumping and overheated once when I was dogging it out. But the engine runs perfect no smoke, cranks right up.

Well heres the story I have a friend that paid $6000 for a 92 GT it looks like a cobra clone its mods are:
3.73 gears
X-PIPE with glass packs (stock headers)
short shifter
CAI
one of those E Cams for mustangs
No A/C or Smog equip

My 95 is completely stock with 162082 miles auto

Well we found a good spot at a stop light an I'm thinking all my friend ever does is floor it and take off spinning everywhere he goes and those bald tires arent going to help him either. I stall my car up to 1100 thats all it will let me go then the light turns green I jump out about 2 cars! I look back he is still side ways
but still comming! I knew his car was more powerful so I just kept looking at my speed to see what mph I'm at when he passes me. He didn't get beside me until 90mph but as soon as he did he just walked away he said he had to shift it into 5th before he passed me. We did it from a roll also but it was no contest he just kept on pulling. I was thinking about what mods should I do to beat his car. Should I start off with the LE1 package because I don't think a cat back and gears will catch him.

Good death man, those 5.0s can be wicked. As for mods you need to beat him...

I dont know too much about LT1s, (LS1 owner here, muwah-hah!), but from what i understand, those motors cant breathe, at all. Throw on a pair of Pacesetter LTs (or something else, depending on budget.. im still saving for my Dynamaxx's) and get rid of those 2.73s! Upgrading gears to 3.42s (stock gears for M6's), or 3.73s will do wonders for the thing. That and a few other bolt-ons (CAI, pulley, etc) should be able to pull on your friends Cammed 5.0. Good Luck!

Oh... and welcome to TFS

Yeah but do you really think LT's, 3.73, pully, and CAI will beat him I'm not so sure about that. That's why I was thinking about the LE1 package to start with I just don't won't to waste my money on small gains. I know those parts complinment each other into making some serious power but I was looking for the best bang for buck.

yes you can pull him with cold air, a cat back, gears and a computer reflash. i'm confused with what you are calling a le1 package. the 1le package was mainly for the suspension. so money spent on exhaust, cold air, and any other "light" bolt ons will add up to good power. remember youv'e got 50 horses on him stock for stock. so have some fun.

The LE1 package is from Elliot's Portworks

I talk to Elliot on the phone and he said it would be better if I got the headers and gear first before buying
his ported heads and cam package.

lol i would fix the alternator and stuff BEFORE MODs, you dont need to loose power during a run. like said above get Cold Air Intake, Descreen the MAF, add some Mid Length or Long Tube headers, i would deffinately get a air foil (that gives you a great air/fuel). Change the thermostat to 160 degrees to keep it cool. may want to air out the hood louvers (fbpracing.com has a article/how to on this). keep in mind with all the power in the front you need a good rear (3.42-i have these or 3.73) or else you are not balanced and wont do any good.

It wont take much for your fomie to take his GT. Remember that you have a significant amount of horsepower more than him. You should definately get the 3.73 gears! The gears will put your car into it's best powerband, which will use your horsepower more effectively. It will give you a kick in the pants! The gears alone should blow his doors off. But do not forget, if you are considering gears, you will want to get a hypertech power programmer or any other type of programmer to recalibrate your spedometer to the 3.73 gear ratio setting. Also, if you want to go ahead and put in a 160 thermostat, you will want to configure it with the hypertech also. If you dont, your car will run rich and you will end up burning more fuel (with gas prices nowadays, i'm sure nobody wants that!) If you want to upgrade your exhaust, i would start with the headers first. and then upgrade to a new cat-back and cold air. A cold air with stock headers and cat-back wont do you much good, you will have lots of air getting into your engine, but it will still be exiting slowly. Headers will free it up and make it flow much better, awaking your formula! But in my opinion, i would start with the gears...take it to the line with the GT, then blow his doors off. Have fun!

^^^ Werd. You got spanked by a 5.0, and now you're scared and questioning your car's abilities, doubt is natural. Get it running good (alternator, etc), and show the guy what these F-bods are made for... killing Ponies!!! Just dont underestimate your car...

Thanks for the help guys I put my car in the shop and their taking care of the eletrical system. There has to be a ground somewhere causing all of the problems. It didn't seem to effect the power output any though.
OK you guys say that a 4thgen LT1 can out perform a fox-body mod for mod? I don't know about that guys I know for a fact a full bolt on fox body manual can run low 13s and mid 12s with slicks (depending on the driver).

Now this 92 GT in question has a cam to go along with full bolt ons and smog and A/C delete. My car is about 500lbs heavier and its a automatic. As far as auto's go the best bolt on bird I've seen even on this site is a mid 13 sec car. I know a 350 can make way more power but in a car thats over 3500lbs vs a 3100lb car that has some weight reduction the odds seem to be still in his favor. That 302 doesn't have to make that much hp to move a light weight fox body.

Can you guys tell me of any race stories of bolt on auto firebirds out running modded fox bodies? I'd loved to hear about them.

Im not really worried about beating this guy because I also have a 3rdgen camaro that has a 327 with trick flow heads, cam, stall, Holley Stealth Ram inake, 950 commander, alot of weight reduciton and fully upgraded suspension. It just needs interior install and a paint job been working on it for years. But I would very much like to beat him with my new freshly jet black painted firebird also.

In order for that GT to hit the 12's it must be one darn good driver with the mods you listed (to the best of my knowledge)

I would first start you by getting the car fixed. My 95 has 169k on it and it's showing its signs... I've got a ground problem on mine too, just doesn't bother me too much right now.

I wouldn't add a whole lot of power to this car before you rebuild that motor. The bolt-ons and the exhaust work with the rear end would be a good way to go for now... If you start doing some head work and/or valve springs get ready to start rebuilding!
