keep throwing code 36, 87 formula 350 TPI, code reader says MAF burnoff relay fault. ive cleared the code a million times and the code doesnt come on all the time. im sick of this code, i have descreened the MAF as well as custom make my own fiberglass ramair system for my ram air 2 hood. the manuals i have for the car say there is a burn off relay but doesnt show or tell me where it is located....very frustrating, these cars have tons of relays and the wired always seem to to turn into a larger bundle thats impossible to follow. so if anyone has any idea where this relay is it would really help, or wat it looks like.... also if there are replacements for this or is the burnoff relay located in the MAF itself? any help would be appreciated.

cleared code yesterday and code has returned (it always does), i know they sell MAF cleaner, but could the burn off relay be located in the MAF itself? could a faulty MAF be responsible for irradic idle (hanging RPM's when throttle is released and doesnt seem to want to drop when car is slowed down to even a dead stop, sometimes suddenly drops, sometimes seems to be hanging throttle is released when i rev the throttle alittle) thinking of upgrading the MAf to a grannelli, do to the ram air setup that could let in water i want to get rid of the open wire element found on the stock MAF's, i believe the grannelli is not an open element wire... but for right now i just want to know where the MAF burnoff relay is...

custom the MAF relayS are on the dr side of the brake booster. now you will find 3 relays there. get a friend to turn the key to the ON pos and you will feel the fuel pump relay click, this will tell you which ones are which. being relays are cheap it was told to me loooooooooong ago to replace both relays and replays them when you replace the MAF.
i cant recall for sure but you can fire up the car and have the inlet side ducting of the MAF off and peer into the MAF and after the car cuts off you will see the fine wires heat up for a brief sec and go out, this i burning off the contaminants. this will tell you if its your power relay or your burn off relay. you can also LIGHTLY tap on the top of the MAF and if the idle starts to change its yuor MAF.
i HIGHLY sugguest getting a HELM manual for your car. it is about 2 in thick and covers YOUR YEAR ONLY not like the hayes where it covers a broad range of birds. the HELM book wqill tell you EVERYTHING about your car. i got mine and sat down flipping pages and was amazed at what it had.

thanx im gona try that once the weather gets about 30 degrees lol. could this affect my RPM's when the throttle is pushed the car accelerated great, no hesitation nothing, but when the pedel is released the RPM's dont seem to want to drop off but they dont increase either. idle is usually way high in the 1200-900 range but sometimes drops drastically to 600 and seems as if it was gona stall but its just the car returning to idle adbruptly.

found the relays, one is labeled MAF power so i figured the other 2 where the burn off and fuel pump. figured out which was the fuel pump and then i switch the burnoff relay with the fuel pump and it worked so im guessing its not the burnoff relay but im still throwing the code. if it was the power relay then the car wouldnt run nore start am i correct??
if im wrong them im guessing that the only culprits can be the MAF itsself, the wireing or the power relay?? the maf power relay is a different relay than the fuel pump and maf burnoff bc the numbers are different so i didnt want to swap them to test it.
any idea how much the relays cost? ballpark...

sounds like you have it figured out. if you have a friend with an 86+ TPI car, borrow his MAF and diagnose. its one of those 2 things.

yea i finnally got around and took the MAF outta my 86 TPI and i switched it....i havent thrown the code for 2 days and the car drives better as well.
has anyone upgraded there stock MAF for a Grannelli high flow MAF, they claim 10-15 rwhp from the swap, but idk.... has anyone seen dyno tests or have done the mod and they have felt the difference?

I have the granatelli on my 95, but I can not tell you if there is a difference or not. I did all of my intake upgrades at the same time. From what I have read though, it does not do much of anything for a mildly modified vehicle. I got it only for the future and the composite plastic over the metal.
