2 weeks ago NJ had flooding rain storms i got caught in one on my way home from school, lake size puddles almost stalled out my car multiple times many new cars stalled out on the road. i made it home but with irradic throttle response and idle. the problem persists till today, the car has a very high idle, and the car seems to drive itself once the throttle is pushed, not that the RPMs increase but they dont decrease. also when the throttle seems to be stuck the and i apply the brake to slow down the car seems to not want to stop and the RPMS seem to want to push the car and when i come to a complete stop the idle is at 1100 to 900 and then drops suddenly to 600-500, the only code ive thrown is 36 and the MAF burnoff relay fault and that has been goin off for months. My guess would be the throttle position sensor but idk wat else it could be that could have been affected by the water... any help would be appreciated. i really need to fix this because its my daily driver.

just checked the throttle sensor with my code reader,(car was off but key was turned to on position) running .58 volts at idle, step on gas voltage goes up accordingly, no jumping around, max voltage at 4.20 volts when pedle is mashed through the firewall. so the throttle sensor is working....so wat could it be? i keep throwing code 36, MAF burn off relay fault....but i cant find the relay...could that be the problem, no other codes though? i had code 36 before the rain storm for quite some time but after the water is when the prob starts. no loss in throttle response just that the rpms dont seem to fall down when the throttle is released. even when the car is stopped seems like engine pulls car forward. sometimes in an adbrupt drop in rpms to regular. just seems like the throttle hangs up...?

It sounds like a sticking IAC valve. It is mounted to the bottom of the TB and controls the air for idle.
custom87blackbird
if the IAC valve is sticking wont it only affect idle? my problem is also part throttle as well as idle but it seems to be affecting everything, the only thing it hasnt affected is throttle response which is fine. the rpm's just hang and dont seem to want to go to idle when i come to a stop...sometimes dropping drasticly when i come to a stop almost like the engine was stalling but it would just drop suddenly to idle(say 1200 to about 600rpms.

only so many things can affect idle/throttle, IAC,TPS, MAF, EGR, ECM. TPS seems to be fine, MAF i have the burn off problem, EGR is fine and ECM is good bc i have great throttle response just higher than regular RPMs as well as if the throttle is sticking and not allowing the RPMs to drop off when the accelerator is released.

As far as I know the IAC is the only thing to have that profound of an effect on the idle.

ok so i ripped the tb off and cleaing the entire thing, took out IAC valve which was prety gunked up and cleaned it and all the passage ways etc. put back together and i still sorta have the problem, it seems to be less pronounced now but still not like it was before the hurricane of nj. is there anything else it could be... i personally think its still the TPS but i just want it to go away, it only seems to affect when the petal is released and idle seems really high. when im driving the car is fine but when say i try to K turn it the idle seems to jump to 1400 or so inbetween Drive and reverse shifts and i kno thats not normal. idk just name wat comes to your head no matter how ridiculous it is lol i just want this gone.
Tyler
If cleaning the IAC valve changed it at all I would replace it.

i was reading an old 2001 issue of CHP and it was on tuning the TPS of an 89 formula 350 and it said that the TPS voltage should be .55 at idle. i know that .5 to.6 is acceptable. they also said that i should jumper the underdash connector with pins A and B and put the car in service mode, then unplug the IAC, start the car and get the car to 500 idle with the idle air screw to set correct idle....ive never done this i usually just start the car and adjust the screw....maybe this will make a difference idk.

my car reads .48 with my scanner pluged in with the car off at the TPS. the TPS maxes out at roughly 4.2 and if i really mash it 4.5 volts(can hear cracking lol). if i adjust the TPS to .55 or even .6 volts after doing the above idle setting wat will happen? will i get better throttle respones...higher idle?

custom, when you cleaned your TB, did you lube it also? when i clean my TB i ALWAYS use something (WD-40 works best for me) to lube the throttle shaft. mine did this same thing and after i shot it down (IAC removed ofcourse) and all worked like norm after.
custom87blackbird
no i didnt use any lube and all i really did was remove the IAC and use TB cleaner (teflon safe) and use brushes etc... maybe i should use alittle WD-40 on the shaft, wat did u do just pray alil on the shaft corners by the butterflies? bc i dont want to get any on the IAC or where the IAC seats itself...
