Full Version: Street Racing Hints
The Formula Forums > Street n Strip > Wins/Loss

Almost every Auto oriented message board has a kill section, and a disclaimer that they do not condone street racing. Yet these sections have hundreds and sometimes thousands of posts. We all know the risks yet this is still a regular occurance. I have come up with a few hints to help fellow street racers learn the ropes

1) Take it to the Track
For many obvious reasons the Dragstrip is the best place to run. Many Clubs have track meets or rentals where people can match up for grudge races. Get involved with this you may find it more fullfilling, and a few bucks at the track is better than a few hundred in court.

2) Keep your Ego in Check
Avoid racing much slower cars, even though some people need to be put in their place. Pay attention to your surroundings. Don't take unnecessary risk for the sake of Ego.

3) Know your Opponent
When possible while on the road take notice of possible opponents. Keen eyes and ears can help aleviate possible embarresment.

4) Don't be a Jerk
Always make an attempt to converse before or after a race or at least give the thumbs up Win or Lose. Friendships can be made this way because most people can appreciate a Fast Car.

5) When is a Race Over ?
When the first guy lets off /or The out come is Clear. The winner lets off when he knows his opponent won't make up the difference. The loser lets off when he knows he can't make up the difference. The Ricer flyby does not mean your the winner.

6) Laws of Attrition
The more you race on the street the better your chances are of getting caught. Some people are lucky but most of us will evenually get caught. Out of the way locations can help but the danger is still there.

Most of this is pretty much commmon sense it is really for some of these younger people. Most young people are impulsive. Hopefully this will help you boys & girls to Think before you Act

More to Come

I would appreciat it if this were made a Sticky

Thanks

So true...

this is a good post. I have a buddy who has gotten his license suspended 3 times for street racing (he didnt even have anything fast...a 96 Camaro RS and then a Scion tC). I wouldnt recommend street racing, especially around where i live in Washington DC because there is a cop on every corner. Go to the track, it's MUCH more worth it in the long run...unless there is that occasional time you just HAVE to smoke somebody, just be safe and aware, and know your surroundings. It's not worth getting killed for...

All of this is very true, and most are looking at this and going 'Pfffttt' HA!'. So Im gonna keep it real.

Im in a sports car... a FAST sports car cops KNOW sports cars. They arent stupid. I usually keep it round 60-62 on main hwy strips.. this way Im not taunting a cop but still making decent time.

I use the old Rule of Thumb if they cant catch you in about 1/8 of a mile they never will. NEVER EVER race on ANY road with hard banking and break neck turns. I dont care who you are, you dont wanna loose your life over a dumb mistake. A fast car can get away from you faster than you think. a motor thats pushing 280+ HP while on a roll combined with about 2000lbs of fiberglass and metal wrapped around you doing about 80-100 mph can leave quite a mark. vehicles were made not to stop on a dime, but to get you to point A to point B.

Also, every red light does not have to be a race. Save the motor and the gas for another day for something more worthy of your bird. Im sure as hell not goin to spend about 5 bucks in gas and wear and tear on my motor to teach a Dodge Neon or a Eclipse whos the bigger man. Now if his name ended in SS or Corvette, we'd have to see how big a man he really is.

Other than that, pinks or paper, which are you racing for? how about that 10 bucks in tread you just left burning out.... yeah thats about how much you spend every time you smoke em.

I agree with all of the above. Racing should be kept at the strip however, what we do in Wyoming is that since it is such a small of a state the highway patrol men get off duty at midnight so we will go out of town around 12:30 or 1:00am to a flat stretch where we can see like 5 miles in both directions so you know if there are any cars coming. Where we go race has a rest stop by it so we park in there so we are out of the road and line up some cars when it is clear. The cops show up every now and again and they just tell us to go home they are easy going here.
