Which antenna do you plan on using? This may help.

did it on my 3rd gen, the only way to get good reception is to put it on the roof which should be metal and should magnetically mount, i tried inside and on rear hatch but thats the best spot, it just looks like a lil black nub like an 1.5" x 1.5" height is .5" rounded turtle shell like square.
i installed SIRUS by the way...idk if that helps....but they say to put it on the roof or rear hatch bc it needs a large metal area to work best

Maybe I should've been more specific.
I'm not concerned about the antenna. I am just trying to figure out how and where to mount the unit (Sirius Stiletto).

oh lol anywhere u want it!
i wouldnt recomend drilling holes in the dash tho, i put mine above the radio on the center consol so i can rest my hand in the same position when changing the radio to change the SIRUS

That's the problem, I can't find a good place on my dash that will make it look like it belongs!

I have a Kenwood deck that is SIRIUS ready as well, but I just recently learned and was kinda blindsided by this...

you still have to by an adapter that requires and additional install. I don't remember the exact name for this piece, but it costs about $150 more + labor if you don't install yourself. Just had to warn you it is not as simple as subscribing to the service, at least not with my Kenwood 5032.
Same holds true for the HD radio that it is supposedly "ready" for. More parts and $. The sale the guy at the audio store threw on me was misleading to say the least...

That sucks that you got mislead like that BBJ. Guess that just goes to prove that even with something as simple as a headunit that salespeople try to pull one over on customers and that's a shame.

I don't listen to much radio, but not to change the subject... is it worth all the work?

Sample of my Stiletto (finally!!!!!!!) I managed to sneak the home dock in place of the ashtray (since I don't smoke). Job is about 75% complete (waiting on an auxiliary interface on my Kenwood HU).
Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Wow i had no idea...although now that you mention it i'm not surprised because of the fact that a lot of the new stereos that are "iPod ready" still require an additional iPod interface cable to plug it into the stereo. It cost me $50 bucks but, to me, WELL worth the money! I never listen to CD's anymore i just have a bunch of playlists on my ipod, and i can control the ipod and all the functions through my stereo controls :-)
Thanks for the warning! Perhaps i will hold off on the subscription for now LOL!

The job is done!

Also, the attached file shows what it looks like when the Stiletto is removed.

Very sweet! I am liking the custom holder that fits right in the ashtray! (mine is currently occupied by many coins LOL) But i have actually refabricated my cupholder that slides out under the AC controls to fit my iPod perfectly :-) I'll get some pics up of that...its cool to see everybody's custom stuff

Thanks, I thought it turned out pretty clean as well (though I really wanted to mount it under the ashtray and have the lid close when not in use, but there's too much transmission stuff going on down there). But, I did not have to make any modifications to the console (except for removing the ashtray lid).
I also considered a passenger cupholder install before I came up with the idea of the dock in the ashtray. Looking forward to seeing your cupholder pics as I couldn't find a way to do that either.
BTW, that custom holder in the ashtray is actually the home dock for the Stiletto (the car dock is too bulky and I felt it was impossible to install the Stiletto in the bird because of it).

heres a little news if you didn't know xm is buying sirrius to make 1 satellite radio company.. the stippulations is with the fcc and the government. they say they aren't breaking any laws because of the evergrowing amount of hd fm and all digital fm stations.. monthly costs should drop as well. i have xm and look forward to the addition of the sirrius stations especially the addition of sec sports.
just thought i'd pass that along. oh and my antenna is mounted inside the car on the rearview mirror on a bracket fabricated by me. no problems with reception

Yeah, I heard that Sirius and XM are merging in the future. But, I thought Sirius is the one buying XM to make this become a reality.
Also, I am hoping that Sirius subscribers can get some of XM's exclusive music channels as well.
One last thing......my antenna is mounted underneath the windshield cowl (can't see it at all, and I get perfect reception!)

When I had Sirius I mounted the "knub" antenna on the carpeting in the rear hatch, the reception was fine.
