Full Version: Go Fast parts, what would you get for an LT1
The Formula Forums > Technical Area > Modifications

Ok, this isn't for any of my cars but I'm wanting some others opinions to see if anyone would do it that same way I would and get the same or close to the same parts.

The car is a 97 Formula WS6, m6, almost 100k on the odometer. The owner of the car wants to try to get it as close to, if not into, the 12's but still keeping it streetable and street legal.

What parts would you get and what specs would you go with on certain items like with the cam, heads, headers, y-pipe or ory, etc? Is there anything else that you would replace along with the main items (cam, heads, LTs/Y-pipe/ORY, etc.) like the springs, retainers, lifters, pushrods, etc? Would you delete anything from the car like the egr system or air pump?

Don't worry about price or budget right now for this. I'm just wanting to get everyones thoughts/opinions.

Dont for get the gear ratio - 4:10's for an M6

Arnt the LT4 kits the hot setup?

Or stroke it to 383?
SassySue09
I was thinking about the 383 stroker kit or the LT4 hot cam kit, but I'm not sure yet on either of those.

And yea, upgrading the rear end would be in order to be able to be sure that it could handle the upgraded hp/torque.

LE2 h/c setup like myself. But make sure that guy gets a 9" as well, as Im on my 3rd 10 bolt.

Im expecting to be in the 11's soemtime this year, but that depends on the rear end holding up.

All in all though, if I was to do this all over again, I would go with a 396 stroker with a similar cam to what I have, maybe even bigger, and try to push 500+hp to the wheels.

After this engine goes, Ill part out the engine and start building a new 500+ ci engine using the new LSX block... it would be nice to have over 600hp NA on a completely streetable car.

And yes, I would remove all emissions items, as they are unnecessary to pass emissions. Besides, thoy're just making the car that much heavier.
SassySue09
Thanks Tyler and Greg for the suggestions.

Greg, where did you find the LE2 head/cam set up or did you put that together yourself? Also how much was the cost on those?

Don't worry about price or budget...

laugh.gif I meant with the price of the aftermarket parts Shaun. laugh.gif

That would be cool to do an LS7 swap though. But he wants to stick with the LT1 engine and see what can be done with that.
SiberianFirestorm
If he is lucky enough to find an LT4 HOT Cam conversion, that will definitely help. Then the intake, exhaust, and suspension upgrade (shocks, springs, LCA, upper and lower A-Arms). If I did not have traction issues, I should be close to 12's myself. Street wise, I beat 12 sec cars a lot.

I'm a lot of help lately, aren't I? gr_jest.gif

oooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh.....can I chime in here?....(you may not wanna hear it) sad.gif

I have an idea- LEAVE IT ALONE.

A 1997 WS6 is a RARE car- I should know.

How about puting that WS6 in the garage and when you get the funds, restore it to its beautiful originallity....then go buy a normal (sorry guys) Formula or T/A and ruin that one.

Sorry- I'll shut up- I just hate to hear when someone is messing with a WS6 Ram Air Formula- too hard to come by anymore.

I bought my car two years ago-almost 3, and I have seen but ONE on ebay or in any car locators (T/A's don't count). I have been looking almost daily since I bought mine.

agree.gif with what Scott is talking about. I live in Northern Virginia / DC area and i have seen only ONE WS6 LT1 Formula EVER! (not sure of the year as it drove past me) So i can agree that they are rare cars, and tampering with it will severely hurt its value. Keeping it original will make it more of a collectors car in the future and will be more desirable. I am not going to be doing much more with my WS6 (all it has is an exhaust and the front has been dropped a bit) and the rest is all cosmetics (red calipers) and little things. When i can save enough money i plan on getting another LT1 or, if i can find a decent price, another LS1 and modding the crap outta that one. burnout.gif But if the guy wants to mod it, a buddy of mine had a 97 SS camaro and had the LT4 in it....said it would keep up and even beat the LS1 cars with no other mods. He put some more mods on it (LT's, ORY, 4.10's, 12 bolt, hypertech programmer, CAI, straight pipes, adjustable torque arm, and of course...some drag radials) I am sure there were other mods, i just havent talked to him about his old SS for quite some time now. But he told me that when he was done with it, that thing would destroy LS1's left and right.
SiberianFirestorm
I would hope so, the LT4 was rated slightly higher than the LS1 bone stock. It would not take much to go from there.

Sue, has anything happened yet?

Not yet I'm sorry to say. He's run into some personal issues that he's having to deal with and those are taking up alot of his time. But I'll keep you all informed when (and if) something does happen. cool.gif

i ran across a 1993 formula at a used car lot and it was sorta sitting all alone in the corner with leaves all over it and low tires...so i asked the guy how much he wanted for it and he said that i wont want it but i told him i wanted to look at the car and it has fair paint and 170,000 miles..which is ALOT.....and it has a tow hitch on the back so i dont know how the trans is or anything bacuse the guy needs a key for the car...the interior is cloth and in fair condition...the dash has 1 big crack on the passangers side and the headliner is beggining to fall around the T-TOPS....i told the guy i might give him 1500 for the car as long as it runs and drives fine...but that was be-4 i knew the mileage...so i may try to jip him down to 800 or so with cash money since its just been taking up space...should i jump on the deal or let it pass??? some help would be great..thx guys

I have been in the auto industry for many years now. Normally specializing in Camaros ,TA's and Vettes. My first recomendation is always a full engine rebuild with heavy mods to the suspension, gearing and exhaust. The simple facts are, you can get into the 12's without all this but once you get there, you always want more. I run in to this frequently and after time passes, they are back wishing they did a full rebuilt from the start. Theres no such thing as enough horsepower and torque.
All of this would be based on budget. If you fid a good tech that really knows their sh*t, this can be done for a very reasonable price with excellent results. Without the full blown engine rebuild, the quik and easy way would be a supercharger package . The only problem is the milage. It may cause blow by into the crankcase from the excessive compression if the rings are worn excessivley. This would all depend on the previous care to the engine in the past. If that route is not desired, next best would be cylinder heads with a out come of 10.50 to 11.1 compression with a hot cam wich would require the ECM to be programed to accomodate high lift and duration as well as as set of 4:10 gears as stated by other members. I would also add a msd ignition and wires as well as some headers since the heads and manifolds would be pulled. Might as well do it while you have them off.
SassySue09
Thanks for the suggestions Rice. He wants to go with stuff like cam, heads, headers, etc. and not with something like a supercharger or bottle. As for any tuning that needs to be done, we've already got someone lined up to do that for him so that's not a problem. As for the engine rebuild, I know that's a must for when you do any type of heavy modifications to a car, or really when you do any mods especially if there are alot of miles on the engine, since you want to be sure that the engine can handle the mods done to it and not blow up on you.

But here's an update everyone on what's been happening since I done the origianl post. In late March/early April his car developed a really bad engine "tick"/"tap" so he took the car off the road until he could find someone near him to work on it since he didn't have the tools to tear the engine down himself nor the money at the time for somwone else to work on it. The middle/end of July he finally found a place near him to work on it and right now they are working on his car to figure out what is/was causing the "tick"/"tap" and they're going to fix that and anything else they find before he starts modding the car.

Rice is for fags
Tick Tap could only be a few things, First and most likley would be a colapsed lifter. But all depends on someones idea of a "tick tap"
Other possibilities are exhast leak, rod or wrist pin knock or possibly loose converter bolts if it has a automatic transmition. All except loose converter bolts or an exhaust leak tells me this would be a pretty high milage car unless it was due to abuse or lack of maintinence...... If that is the case, its time for a rebuild. I wish him the best and hope the car makes it out of surgery without a hitch.
