So what's up with all the oil brands, I was thinking of buying Castrol Syntec 10w-30, but then decided I get Mobil1 Extended Performance 10w-30 at $36 for 6 quarts. Are we trying to only save money by getting the Castrol or is it indeed better than Mobil 1. I mean both are synthetic, but Nascar uses Mobil 1. Also, what damage if any are we talking about when we switch from petroleum based to synthetic?

Also, this one dude at wal-mart told me to get 20w-50. After researching it I found it could work but would put your engine through alot of extra work. When you turn on the vehicle, as much oil as possible has to flow freely to reach all the metal parts. Sure it might feel and handle better, especially in areas like mine where the early spring temperatures during the day reach already 80-85F, summers at 100-120. Overall I think it is too heavy and instead would create extra friction. If someone agrees or disapproves, let me know.-forsaken731@yahoo.com

20-50 oil is a no-no.Like you said, during a cold start it does not circulate very well.I use 10-30 Pennsoil synthetic and 5-30 is even ok.But I only drive my car in the summer so I use the 10-30.

Other than the cost I cant think of a single reason not to use synthetic oil everywhere. It helps motors last longer, run cooler, and make more power.Changing the motor, transmission,& rear drive oils to synthetic is good for an honest 10 hp.

Castrol still uses parafin wax in their oil. I stay clear of it. My dad and I took the top end apart on a 90 Cavalier 3.1 L V-6. The vavle covers and rockers were covered in wax. We cleaned it all up and put it back together. My father put Castrol back in it again. A few months later and 3 oil changes the gasket leaked again. Guess what we found again? Mobil 1, Amsoil, and Royal Purple are the top choices these days.

Horsepower TV took a 98 Camaro Z28, bone stock with dino oil. Tested on the dynometer. Then changed all of the fluids with Royal Purple, tranny, diff, and motor. Tested on the dynometer again and showed a full 10hp and I think 11 ft-lbs of torque increase.

Food for thought.

Yeah i know what you are talking about, but I am hesitant to purchase Royal Purple not because it is expensive but because it does not have the starburst stamp seal that reads, For Use in Gasoline Engines. Maybe I'll try it sometime until then I'm sticking to MOBIL1
