Hi guys and gals. My headliner just started coming down after nearly 12 years. I am just going to replace the whole thing, easier for me. Oddly enough, the dealer seems to have the best price for a headliner at $174.00, just gave him the last 8 digits of my vin, nice and easy. I was looking at fbody motor sports, but at $175 (special price) + shipping, the dealer is the winner and I can just pick it up.
Any pointers on removing? Screw removal locations, where to start etc. Obviously the sun visors and interrior lights must come down. I see someone has a detailed 3 gen removal procedure documented here.
Wanted to ask before I started.....the possiblilty of frustration existing with this job. People want a whole lot of $$ to install one...thats ok....I can do it myself.
Thanks
119,500 miles and running strong!

Before you buy the one from the dealer, find out from them what the backing board is made out of. Most stock ones have the fiberboard backing board on them, which can deteriorate (ie break down) over time or have problems due to extereme heat conditions with the windows rolled up or if you have t-tops the fiberboard ones can break down if you end up having a leak . The aftermarket ones use a PVC backing board which in most cases prevents the problems associated with the fiberboard backed ones. If know that the ones that F-Body carries have the PVC backer on them.
As for what you need to all do to replace the one in there, you need to remove the sunvisors, the sail panels, the A-pillars and sometimes the dome light. After that all that is usally holding the headliner in is some push pins. But I know when I replaced the headliner in my 87 that the aftermarket liner I bough included the instructions on how to remove the old one and install the new one.

I have a really cool aftermarket headliner in my car (dont know where it came from cause it was on the car when i bought it) I'll take a few pics of it and show you...but basically its made of leather instead of cloth and on the back over the rear passanger seats, there is a large firebird emblem slightly popping out of the headliner. It looks REAL cool, i'll snap some pics! I like it much better than the cloth ones

Hey i just snapped a few pics of my headliner if you wanted to see. Have you already purchased the headliner from the dealer, cause if you did than i guess this is pointless but if not check this out anyways...sorry for the quality i took them at night and you can see a reflection of light off the dust particles on the roof.

that's pretty cool dude. If I had a headliner in my formula I'd definitely consider doing something like that

Just though I'd throw in my $.02 here. I tried to have my stock fiberboard headliner recovered and ended up with a huge mess. Unknown to me, the fiberboard was very mushy and falling apart, the guy totally botched the job. I have no t-top leaks, so you can imagine how bad one would be with even the smallest leak. He didn't charge me so no harm done, but def go with the PVC if you haven't already done this.
Freshbake that headliner is awesome, wish I knew about that when I did mine.

Just an FYI on this topic. I found a post in a Mazda forum on how this is done. Too bad there isn't enough headliner in my t-top to do this.

Hey people. Been a while, had issues getting the Fbody Motorsports headliner, they had problems with their supplier. Took 6 months to get it. I just installed it. Looks great. Only question, as it is fairly heavy compared to the factory headliner, it probably hangs about 1-2 inches at the center (above the center console) lower than the actual roof line. Doesnt seem to be an issue over my head though, no real sag there, thank goodness (unless this is just the way it is). Anyone install and address this type of issue and raise it? It isnt a problem but curious if anyone else addressed this. Thanks again.

I didn't have that issue with the one I put in my 87 but I've heard of that happening to other people with aftermarket headliners. What they ended up doing is getting some tube type adhesive and running a bead/line of it on the back of the headliner in the area that it sagged down, putting it back up and then using a piece of board (ie 2x2 or 2x4) with one end on the console and the other on the headliner to keep it up and in place while the adhesive dried. Once it was dry they removed the board and they were good to go. One hint, put a rag between the board and the console and put a sponge between the board and the headliner. Those keep the board from damaging either of those.
