Full Version: 93 TA ram air questions...

Well I don't actually have a Formula, I have a 1993 TA but I was hoping to find help here since it would be relevant to either model of said year. I was going to buy an actual SLP Firehawk ram air box and lid and mate it to an LT1 Firehawk hood.... only to find out from the SLP rep I talked to that the official Firehawk equipment won't fit on a 93 or 94 TA. Something about the connection to the TB, hood clearance etc.... so what I'm thinking is I'll get one of these: https://www.ramairhood.com/store/scripts/pr...sp?idproduct=23 :since they have detailed photos of it installed on the appropriate car. Now here's my problem. I think the Predator hood is ugly.... so does anyone know if the Firehawk, GM WS6 or any other LT1 ram air hoods will give me enough clearance with a setup like that? Anyone done anything like this to a pre-WS6 LT1? Any help would be much appreciated...

Suncoast creations sells two style hoods, the predator and a WS6 style hood. I've heard their work is unsurpassed. They also sell a functional ram air box that is mated to their hoods. They are pricey, but you get what ya pay for.

yeah I checked them out.... the thing I'm worried about is most of the ram air boxes I've found say they're for 95-97.... SLP told me no ram air kits fit on 93 and 94 unless it's taken from a 93-94 Firehawk or custom made, so I don't know what to think. The chances of me finding a rear wrecked 93-94 Firehawk to pull parts from is just about nil. I'm half considering getting a Suncoast box if it'll fit, then get an Octane Motorsports carbon fiber ram air hood which is just a clone of the Suncoast Predator hood.... don't like that style much, but I guess I might have to settle for whatever will fit... the up side of the latter option is, regardless of hood style, carbon fiber would be nice as opposed to a 50 pound fiberglass hood

I think the SLP rep is full of it

Yeah, so do I, to be honest. I wanted to fully check things out before actually going and spending the money. I'm just torn because I haven't seen pictures of the SLP Firehawk parts on a 93 or 94, so I dunno if I want to spend the 200 bucks for the non-refundable SLP stuff and risk it not fitting. Like I said I've seen pictures of the Power Hood setup installed. With that one it's probably just a matter of which hoods will fit it. I'd prefer not to be stuck with a 98+ looking hood since they look dumb on the LT1s, but if all else fails and I'm strapped for hood clearance I can always get one of these bad boys

I'm thinking the difference is based on MAF or no-MAF being in the air intake system. If that's the case, it is easy enough to "splice" something into the speed density ECM controlled air intake system on the 93 model.

SLP reps know what they are talking about in my experience with them, they just sometimes can be a bit NJ rude.

I've got a Suncoast Ram Air hood on my 97 (there's pics of it in the Gallery if you want to take a look at it). The fit and quality of it are great as is the air box that I also got from them.

The issues that the rep from SLP is probably talking about is that since the 93's are speed density cars the top of the engine, mainly the intake area, is different slightly then it is on the 94-97 cars, also with the 93's not having the MAF. Because of those the fitment of the hood and air box will be slightly different then on the 94-97 cars with the main thing being that the air bellows from the air box to the TB needs to be longer, but like Jon said that's not that big of a deal to fix. You just need to get a longer bellow from someplace.

Hope that helps you out some.

SLP made a duplicate of the stock WS6 hood and the stock WS6 airbox. They called it the Ram Air HO hood. They used the same airbox for their Camaro "Ultra Z" hood. I run the Ram Air HO on my 94.... no problems. I also do not have an MAF sensor, and that was no problem. SLP has discontinued these parts, but the fact that they were the stock WS6 parts (except for the "Pontiac" and "Ram Air" logos on the airbox lid) indicates that the stock parts will definitely work on a 94 and should work on a 93.

Actually that's quite helpful since SLP is offering the original Firehawk/WS6 ram air equipment on clearance. The SLP guy just told me it would have hood clearance issues, but since you have the exact hood I want and on a 94, that pretty much solves that question. The only other problem he mentioned was that the throttle body in the 93 and 94 is further away than the later models, which I also see you addressed with some home-made tubing... thanks a lot! That's exactly what I was wanting to do to mine

I don't think that's true. It's the same engine, the same intake, the same throttle body, bolted to the same susupension, same trans, and same driveshaft. eh whatever. cool.gif

Maybe the guy was just trying to BS me into buying some unnecessary extras.. Who knows... I've only owned a 99 and this 93, so I haven't actually been under the hood of a 95-97 to know better, but based on what I've seen, I don't think I'd have any differences aside from the lack of a MAF sensor, which actually makes it easier... I just added a sig pic from when I first bought it so it's nice and simple to analyse. Gotta love radiator humping ebay intakes laugh.gif
