Full Version: Edelbrock headers

I am rebuilding my LT1 and was planning to use Mac headers as they are one of the few with AIR fittings. Anyway, there are none in stock, so I am looking around. Hooker super comps don't have the fittings.

Anyone have any experience with Edelbrock's headers? They have ceramic and titanium coated version with AIR fittings.

I am so ready to get this bad boy back on the road. biggrin.gif

Did you check with Jet Hot? They sell several different brands of headers, with their coatings on them. In the past, they would add emissions fittings to the ones that didn't have them. I've had O2 bungs and an EGT bung added to mine.

Injuneer,

I am not sure if I looked before, but will now. I posted some questions about Hookers a few months ago on this thread.

Edelbrock didn't have anything at the time, but hey do now. The look good, both ceramic coated and titanium coated. Since they appear to be new, I guess folks don't have them. I am finished with the short block and will install it this weekend. Heads and exhaust will go on shortly there after, so need some headers.

Thanks for the tip, I will check Jet Hot and see if they can help.

Just checked Jet Hot.

They have Pacesetters with AIR fitting and the Sterling coating for $497. No availability on Mac or Headman. Hooker says they have some but I am not sure I believe them.

Pacesetters are 1-1/2" dia primarys vs. Mac and Edelbrock's 1-5/8" and 2-1/2" vs. 3" collectors. What will this do to my power output?

Thanks,
E.

I was never a fan of edelbrocks, I've never seen a set of fourth gen ones though. The thirdgen ones i've seen never impressed me.

Matt,

Do you mean go with the 1-5/8" or 1-3/4" ? Obviously, the Pacesetters are not the best choice 'cause of the small tube size.

Headers for the 93 are hard to find with AIR fittings.

I wouldn't consider a 1-1/2" primary... way too small. I had a set of JBA shorties for a while, 1-1/2" -> 1-5/8" step design, and they did not do much for the top end at all. Currenlty running 1-3/4" AS&M mid-lengths. I think the 1-3/4" will make the best top end HP, but the large diameter tubes might cost you a bit of torque on the low end on a "stockish" engine.

I would think, from what Fred said, that a 1 5/8" would be best. For you. That is what most people I know run. The 1.5 is not much more than stock, so it would seem to not be a great improvement for the price.

Guys,

I posted a similar question to Team Chevelles to see what the motor heads over there had to say. On poster recommended running the 1-1/2" primary tube headers.

After many phone calls, I discovered that there wasn't much out there for my car. The Pacesetter 1-1/2" headers were for a '94 which has the passenger side AIR fitting pointing the other way. They recommended "bending" it 180 degrees to fit my car. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade, and I can tell you from experience that bending welds doesn't end happily.

So my choices were:
- '94 Pacesetters which I can have a shop remove the fitting, re-weld it, and return it to Jet Hot for re-coating. Or... have Jet Hot do it all, but I own them no matter what. These are long tubes BTW.
- Order Edelbrocks from Summit. They don't have the ceramic coated ones in stock until 3/21/08. Their less expensive titanium coated ones are available now. I could order those.

I searched the web looking for the Mac's I was originally going with. I called every place I could find. I ended up contacting JD's Performance. The guy there knew a guy whose mother was dating the owner of Mac Performance or something. Sound like a soap.

Anyway, he had some headers for my car stashed. Mac does not have any for my car in their production and doesn't expect to have any in the near future. I am putting the short block in tomorrow and need headers NOW! I guess I got lucky; I have Mac's on the way. I wanted long tubes, but at this point since there are pretty much nothing to fit a '93 available, I will take what I can get. Shorties is what is going in the car. Better than the stock exhaust.

I did build a heat shield to protect my AC box just in case. I also added thermal sleeves to all the wiring in the area. PM me if you want a pic and details.
