Full Version: Tire sizes?

I'm thinking of grabbing some bigger tires and rims for my car- I'dlike to go for 17 inch wheels with 275/40/17 tires. Any problems with 275's rubbing? I don't want them touching the fenderwells when turning, etc.

Would it be better to cap the size at 255?

TIA for your help.

You won't have any problems with the 275/40/17s. That's what I run on my 97 and 99 on the 17" rims I have on them.

I have 17 x 8 rims front and rear. 275/40/17 on the front and 285/40/17 on the rear. No problems, except one of my rear rims has an offset issue and rubs on bad bumps, but that is it. I had 275's all around until this set of tires.

Nice- thanks to both of you- there's a shop on ebay that sells tire and rim packages for f-body's: http://stores.ebay.com/BONES-ENTERPRISES

I don't know if the tires are world class, but some of the deals they have are good for just the rims!

PM me with what you are looking for. I might be able to assist.

Most tire manfuacturers recommend at least a 9.0" wide wheel for a 275/40-17 and a 9.5" wide wheel for a 285/40-17. An example of the guidelines from the Yokohama website:
QUOTE
RIM/WHEEL WIDTH

Each Yokohama tire has a specific rim width range on which the tire can be mounted. Failure to follow rim width recommendations may result in poor tire performance or possible wheel and/or tire failure.

Whether they will rub depends on the offset. Keep in mind that the stock wheels and tires on the WS6 and SS coupes are 17x9.0" 50mm offset with 275/40-17. The chassis is designed to accept the 275's. The most popular upgrade is a 17x9.5" wide wheel with the 275's. As long as you keep the offset on a 9.5" wide wheel in the range of 45-56mm, you will not have any rubbing problems.

For even wider tires, you can fit a 17x11.0" 50mm offset in the back, with 315/35-17 tires. May require a bit of hammering on the inner fenders, and trimming the projecting edge off the jounce bumper bracket.

315 on the left, 275 on the right:

315's from the back:

Hi, I have 295/35-18's on the rear, and 275/35-18's on the front, and they don't stick out much past where the factory rims/tires did. I'm
not sure of the offset of the rims but there is no rub's, and the car is lowered 2" also. This is a 99' ws6 formula. The rim style is C06 style.

Got a few pic's in the "new mew members lounge" under "I like my Pontiac's". I'll see if I can add one showing tires profile.

Fell free to provide a link- they actually have a really good rep with the guys on the bigger boards, so I was going on that.

Wow! Really nice looking ride man- you may have sold me on that style of wheel as opposed to the 5 star style Z06'ers.

Joe there's nothing wrong with Sumitomo tires. I had put those on my 97 shortly after I got it and I got over 60,xxx miles on them before I had to replace them and I wasn't easy on them either, running them at the track and doing some good smoky burnouts with them too. I've even got them on my 87 right now, don't take it easy on that set either and I've got at least 20,xxx miles on that set and they're still going great. So unless you've used a tire don't knock it. wink.gif

Oh and I never had any problems in any kind of weather (rain, sleet, snow, etc) with them either.

If I can find it (I know it's on my computer somewhere) I've got a pic of my 97 with them on and me doing one heck of a burnout with them. If I can find it I'll post it up.

I'd love to see them, Sue smile.gif

Here's two pics, one a side view of my 97 with the Sumitomo's on it and the other one is the burnout pic (reduced size pic, if anyone wants the full size one let me know and I can email it to you). Hope you enjoy them. cool.gif

Very much Sue- thank you! The tires look nice! I'm mainly interested in a tire that handles well and won't shred in a couple seasons. I think the Sumitomo's might be the ticket! smile.gif
SassySue09
You're very welcome. I'm glad you liked them. Yea the Sumitomos aren't a bad tire at all for being a "cheap" tire and as long as you take care of them (like any other tire with proper inflations and stuff) they'll definetly last more then a season or two. Heck mine lasted me from November 2002 until July 2006 when they finally wore out enough that I had to replace them.
