how would a 98% stock 2000 trans a4 a4 do against a 06ish Shelby GT? (not gt500)
for those unfamiliar the Shelby GT package includes an intake, exhaust, gears, hood, body kit, wheels, interior stuff etc.
it's rated at 320hp and it's manual.
only mods on the trans am are cutout right before rear axle and free ram air.
i'm assuming the mustang would win, but by how much?

You'd either stay side by side or beat him, depending upon starts and all...
my car has abou 300hp with the mods and I can pull away from a 06 07ish Mustang GT and those are rated at 300 hp...I bet with a ram air ws6 youd beat a shelby gt...the regular gt shelby's are nothing to write home about...just a mustang with some bling and some extra plastic...
if you race one, let me know how you do!

I thought about trying it today when I saw a Shelby on the road. Unfortunately, I was driving my mom's Honda. Darn mother's day lunches!

I have ran several Mustang GT's in my 1 ton Dodge, but never seem to find them in my TA. I usually win with my truck though.

That's because mustang owners know to hide when they see a bird.
As for the race, an almost stock LS1 should have no problem with a mustang GT, even if it's got 20 more hp than a base GT. The only chance i would see it having would be from a dig. That's really the only situation where those mustangs have a chance...and with a GOOD driver. But never forget, anything can happen on the street. I say go out there, give it your best shot. It's always all in fun, but i'm pretty confident you'll win.

creeper, just to let you know, that HP it's rated at (320) is at the flywheel, not at the rear. If you take off some for the parasitic loss you and him will have about the same HP at the rear.

Trying to figure out why you guys think a WS6 car would be more of a match vs a regular Formula or T/A, cause basicaly their all the same.
Anyway Your A4 T/A should be in the 285-300 RWHP area and the Mustang is roughly 20 RWHP less. The stang has a slight mechanical advantage because of the manual trans but with a good holeshot you should be able to overcome that.

yeah i figured i had a slight advantage in the power department, but the mustangs gears and manual transmission seem like they'd make up for it. i do at least have the 3.23's though.
maybe someday we'll go down to the track. my friend's dad owns the car so i don't know if he'll race me. my friend always pokes fun at my car about how the shelby would beat it, so i'd like to see what would happen.
even if it's just close i'd be pretty happy. if my 8 year old daily driver that i bought making minimum wage can even stay close with a brand new $40k weekend car it would make being broke every week from gas even more worth it.

With his gears and it being a manual it will really only make a difference if he knows how to really drive a manual. You've got to remember that in the majority of the cases (99%) the computer in your car with its automatic will shift faster then a person with a manual can.
But keep us updated so we can congratulate you when you whip his butt at the track.

Thank you and AMEN! WS6 is overrated, especially when you talk straight line drag performance as opposed to a regular V8 f-body. Now the WS6 cars do handle aggressive cornering and braking better, but at a drag it is a toss up...

Except that you have to remember, everything else being equal, the torque curves in each gear is better with a manual. Why? Becuz there are more gears! That said, in proper tune the Firebird should win--better engine is why.

I agree
This is one of the reason's I didn't order a WS6 back in `98 cause it was already known that there was No Real HP Difference. And as far as the Suspension goes it really isn't that much better.

I dont know if I can agree with that. My car is not a WS6 but I did install all of the suspension components & sway bars and it made a big differance in how well the car corners. And I still have 16" wheels vs. 17" WS6.
