Dudes I am seriously confused. These dudes at Summit tell me they are, the dealers say they are not, the junkyard owners its a mix and match. Okay watch, can a V6 differential fit on a V8 housing and work, that is pending the v6 differential had the same features as the damaged V8 differential? If it does, would I just need to exchange the spider gears from my V8 one onto the V6 differential? How could that be though, I remember comparing the axle shafts for both v6 and v8, the v8 ones were slightly longer? any information would help? Also, does anyone know of a place that sells Clutch Plates that sandwich the springs in the posi-tract setup? peace

From what I've been able to find out, the rear ends are the same for all models from 93-02 with a couple of diferences. The real differences are the center hubs where the rims fit (early 4th gens have bigger center hubs then the later models) and there is a difference with the actual differental between the cars with limited slip and the ones without it. Since the majority of V6 cars don't have limited slip I'd have to say that you're better off finding one from a V8 car just to be on the safe side since most of those came with limited slip.

Sorry but I don't know where you can find that clutch plate.

I do know that some are a 2 series carrier and others a 3. I have seen a few v6's with the 3 series, but most were swapped to it. Obviously, the 3 series is stronger.

well looked around on-line and locally but no clutch plates. What I did find was that alot of mechanics said that the gov-loc differential can't be repaired and that it's crappy. There is no such thing as a clutch kit for stock differentials unlike the Eaton one. they recommend I get an Auburn or Eaton, for like $400-600. Stock ones from the dealer are $800, so they cost more and are less potent than aftermarket, how does that work? I still say: "ALL I NEED ARE SOME CLUTCH PLATES!!!"

This looks like the kind of diff that stock firebirds come with, at least those that I have seen. As you can tell it doesn't have the bearing or gear ring. No specifications that it uses an Eaton type of lock mechanism to provide full traction when needed.

this is another kind that I have seen, but supposedly it can also fit firebirds. One clarification, V6 birds do they have 26 spline axle and V8 birds have 28 splines, or is it more complex than that? this looks like a very sophisticated differential, some sources I have read from say it usually comes off a Z28 or the light duty trucks.

My TA came with 3.23 gears and with the type of 7.5 10 bolt differential that you see on the first pic. My axle shafts are 28 splines. So as long as a GM differential has those specifications, does it mean it is compatible with these cars? Any info would help greatly.

so is that second differential also seen on TA's?
