I have a 98 formula, with about three working speakers. When i bought the car someone had literally taped some of the speakers together! Around december of last year I bought a Sony Xplode radio to put in my car, because the cd player does not work on my stock system. Now I am faced with the task of buying speakers and installing the radio and speakers myself. My monsoon system had ten speakers but my sony only works with four... So is it possible to run some off of the amplifier? Also what would be the most cost effective speakers to purchase?

From what I read, the Monsoon systems are a PITA to work with! Head unit should be fine, but once you start digging into speakers, you may be disappointed as it seems the Monsoon speakers are 2-ohm, and some are dual-voice coil.

An alternative may be to run new wiring for new speakers, but I suppose someone on this board who has used aftermarket speakers with the Monsoon system can chime in.

i have pioneer 6.5 inch in the doors running off the monsoon amp. the lower ohm impedence means the amp doesnt have to work as hard to be as loud.

Heres some good info for you I found off another website sticky:

Firebird coupes have component 6.5S (6.5" oversize) 2-ohm mids and .75" 4-ohm tweeters mounted separately in the doors, dual voice coil 6.5S (4-ohm + 4-ohm) subs mounted in the sail panels (beside the rear seat), and component 4" 4-ohm mids and .75" 4-ohm tweeters mounted separately in the hatch area. The two door mids and two hatch mids account for four of the eight channels of the amp while the DVC subs account for two channels each to make up the other four channels. This leaves the front and rear tweeters to be powered directly by the head unit.

Camaro coupes have component 6.5S 2-ohm mids and .75" 4-ohm tweeters mounted coaxially in the doors (they look like ordinary coax speakers but are actually wired as separate components), single voice coil 6.5S 2-ohm subs in the sail panels, and 4" 4-ohm full-range speakers in the hatch area. All eight elements are powered by the amp.

Convertibles have component 6.5S 2-ohm mids and .75" 4-ohm tweeters mounted coaxially in the doors. The schematics show 6.5S 2-ohm woofers and .75" 4-ohm tweeters mounted coaxially in the quarter panels beside the rear seats but inspection of the actual speakers has discovered both the woofers and tweeters are actually 4-ohm. All eight elements are powered by the amp.

Great info! Has anyone had any luck finding aftermarket subs for the sailpanels? It seems that 6.5" DVC subs are kinda hard to come by! I'd rather replace my blown sub with a good aftermarket unit instead of another OEM Monsoon speaker.

Okay, so after an exhaustive search, it seems that they don't exist. Seeing as how the sailpanel subs are DVC, I'm assuming there are four wires running to each sub. If I replace them with aftermarket SVC subs, would it be acceptable to use just two of the stock wires? I'm also assuming that each of these subs uses two channels from the amplifier, so would just one channel (two wires) be enough wattage to drive aftermarket subs? I'm pretty good at upgrading/replacing NORMAL stock stereo systems, but this Monsoon stuff has thrown me for a loop...

Thanks!

Not tryin to send anyone to a diff. site by no means but a guy by the name of KEEAUDIO on LS1Tech sells 4ohm speakers.. cant remember what brand they are. A few people have purchased them and are satisfied, tho he sends you a wooden spacer because they dont exactly fit perfect and are a lil deeper than your normal monsoon speaker. I have yet to purchase some but I feel in the near future I will as well.

Seems as if they are Bazooka subs he is selling. I'll continue to look over there to see if I can get some info on how to buy a set. He says he only knows of two companies that make a 6.5" DVC sub. That would explain why I wasn't finding anything...

Thanks for the lead!!

Thanks, man!

I acutally found these during my search, but they are still SVC.

They would be fine, as long as one channel from the monsoon amp would be sufficient to push them.

That's what I'm still unsure of...

You might want to check with Crutchfield. I know they used to carry the 6.5" DVC speakers that our cars use but I'm not sure if they still do or not.

Sue...

Crutchfield was actually the first place I checked (via their website). No luck! BUT...I haven't called them. I've found in the past that they can be VERY helpful over the phone, and actually will give advice over the phone without pushing a product...kinda rare these days! smile.gif Hopefully if I call they might have something more than their website is showing...if not, I guess I will hafta either dig up some bazookas like that guy is selling on f-body.com, or give a SVC set a shot.

Thanks!

bout 12 years ago I had a pair of 12 inch Duel Voice Coil subs in a custom box... I am kinda foggy on this since its been awhile but.. on a DVC speaker.. are there 4 posts or 2? I have forgot Ohms law as well... but if I remember correctly if you have 2 wires ( R/L R/L ) going to a DVC driver.. then I am assuming there are 4 posts on them.. I have not tore into my factory system yet.. my CD is out on my 95 and just want to replace it stock to retain steering controls and stock look....

back to the story..

If the monson speakers are rated at 4 ohms @ DVC then wiring the the leads in SERIES will duplicate the amp load to a single voice coil driver.. BUT I MAY BE MISTAKEN!!
