Ok so this guy i know has a pretty tricked out v6 mustang. I know he is running with exhaust upgrades, i think cold air intake, suspension, and I know he is spraying.

I have hooker headers and a cutout with a small timing advance on my MSD distributor. If he doesnt spray I would smoke him right? but if he did spray, would he have the jump on me and would i be able to catch up?

There is some personal beef between us, as i know he likes my girlfriend....haha i can i beat him if he sprays?

Im in a 97 trans am convertible btw
Da97Bandit
both are automatics btw
Tyler
Depends on how much he sprays. A 100 shot might even the two up. Without spraying I dont see him keeping to close. An automatic will be slower in the V6 to.
Freshbake
im pretty confident that you will beat him. What year is his stang btw? If he doesn't spray, you'll murder him. If he does spray, i'm sure it will only be a 75-100 shot, which i still think you will beat him. Do you have any mods done to your car at all?
Da97Bandit
all i have is headers a cutout and an msd distributor....i dont know what to upgrade...i want to get ram air....and definitely do some cam work, pushrods, rockers etc...but i dont know what is good and what works and stuff...i htink he has a 75 shot...

any tips on what i should upgrade and what parts and stuff would be cool....but this is the wrong forum for that...
Freshbake
Yeah you'll beat him. What length headers are you running? Looks like a good list of mods you have there for the future. I would definitely invest in some suspension upgrades though, because you could have all the power in the world...but if you cant put it to the pavement, it's pretty much useless. My plans for my car is to do some suspension work before i do the big mods (basically anything beyond bolt-ons, ex. cam) That way when i do upgrade my car to have gobs of power, it'll be ready to control it. Perhaps look into a torque arm and LCA's to start with.
That's one advantage to having an A4 car over the M6 guys on here...once we build our cars to lauch hard, worrying about the 10 bolt rear isn't as much of an issue. :-)

well it could also get down to the bare essentials, like new plugs and oil change to synthetic. maybe clean your air filter or replace if it's not a K&N. Look into E3 spark diamond shapped plugs, BOSCH 3 or 4 prong, maybe NGK. Ram Air Hood would definetly help but you have to make it functional by buying an Air Box too and fit it with a K&N universal. remember to hit that performance button if you have it, i don't think manual TA's have it. have your windows all the way up when you race. work on your launch and check tire pressure.

check out: ramairhood.com for the hoods and air box.
lowering your car with some springs will make it closet to the ground and improve aerodynamics

Forget the Bosch plugs. I had them and took them out after a week. Clean & wax the car ( I have seen a 10th in the 1/4 with this). Make sure you have good tire pressure. Practice your launches if you are going from a stop. A convertible is better aerodynamically with the top down and the boot on.

You should be able to take him without too much trouble. If he has a 100 shot or more, it will be close, but it comes down to how good he is.

I agree with Matt, forget the Bosch plugs. I've used them in both my 97 and 99 and had issues with both cars with them (misfiring and rough idle issues) so I took them out and replaced them. Right now I'm running ACDelco plugs in my 97 and NGKs in my 99 without any issues at all.

But I agree too that without him spraying you'll wipe the street with him, if he sprays it'll depend on the shot he uses and how good of a driver you both are.

Either way best of luck.
Da97Bandit
Im running shorties...my dad thought it was good at the time..i want long tubes, and forget Bosch, I broke 3 trying to get them into the 7th plug hole....i have ac delcos as welll....but what do i do about cam work and stuff? Like, i know what it all does but im a little less knowing of good ratios and brands and what i need after i replace that...

My mom just got her digital camera back (she dropped it)so i should be able to get some pics up soon...dont laugh at my front bumper though, seeing as how the paint is wearing bad...i just dont have the money for new paint...

and i cant lower my car...cuz my cutout is already too close as it is...
xXGhosTBirDXx
well i'm sorry to hear that about BOSCH plugs, they worked for me just fine. Did you make sure you calibrated them to specifications? I'll tell you that anti-seize compound can do wonders. Also any help with the "differential compatibility" forum under drivetrain.
SassySue09
Da97Bandit - with the cam and related items what we can suggest will depend on several factors such as what you eventually want the end result to be (street, street/strip, strip only) with your car plus also on how much money you have to spend.

The best thing I can suggest is to call Comp Cams and talk to a tech guy there. Once you call them they can give you a suggestion or two for the best cam to go with and what related parts you'd need to run it.

xxGhosTBirdDxx - Believe when I tell you that I was running the correct plugs for their application, that they were gapped/calibrated to what they were supposed to be and that everything was done properly and they were installed correctly when I put them in. It still didn't make a difference, the Bosch ones made both my very lightly modded 97 and heavily modded 99 run like crap and caused issues with both of them.
xXGhosTBirDXx
well I can't argue the fact that more people on this forum agree that BOSCH plugs don't work, but either they are meant for stock cars or either they were some faulty ones. What did you end up doing with them anyway?
Da97Bandit
I returned mine...told them to damage them out i want my money back, they complied willingly haha

Im lookin for street use, but you know, put it on the strip every so often. Comp Cams though? I'll look into it...my dad seems to think I have enough power....I laughed
SiberianFirestorm
A good friend of mine said to go with Lunati. The Comp Cams tend to lose timing farther back on the cam. As for a cam ratio, I will have to look that up.

Haha oops i bought the Bosch plugs for my car when i did my longtube install. I got the platinum +2's for my car, and i have no problems with they (yet). Hopefully they hold up well...otherwise i'll take mine back. I gotta say that honestly i would never go and purchase a functional ram air set up to make your car faster, because i promise you won't notice much of anything, and it will cost a LOT. I would just go and get a cold air kit, but make sure the material is made of plastic. I had the SLP CAI on my 95 (it was metal and ceramic coated) but it did get quite hot...which causes a performance loss. I think you'll probably see better performance gains with just that. And as for cams, well that gets really complicated depending on what you want to primarily use the car for. I think for my cam i'm gonna go with the 224/224 114. I also wouldn't recommend going with a big cam, cause if you have a cam that only makes power up top, the auto transmissions don't like the high revs like the T56's do.
Oh and another thing you could do that only costs a few bucks is a process called seafoaming your car. Basically it will clean out all the gunk out of your fuel lines, engine, ect. I want to try it, but haven't had time. Here's a link to how to do it if you are interested:
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.p...ghlight=seafoam

Now go out and crush that pony boy!
(oh and PS - Any male human being who drives a V6 mustang that tries to start a rivalry, just bring up in the convo what he drives...rivalry settled)
xXGhosTBirDXx
oh yeah, I forgot to mention SeaFoam. Is it true you can use that stuff to restore cars that have been sitting there for awhile, like to loosen up the piston rings and stuff? what others methods work?
SiberianFirestorm
SeaFoam Topic

Here is a little ditty I did a while back for you. If the car is bad enough, I would leave it over night. Just make sure you do not park near the house. It will smoke like nothing you have ever seen before. It will make a difference, but be careful if you have high mileage. You can eat the oil around the rings and create problems for yourself and end up needing a rebuild/refresh.

Matt
Freshbake
so are you going to race him? gears.gif
Da97Bandit
he wont race...found out he only uses his nitrous for purge shots in car shows....but i just crippled my car....10%ethanol gas is not good for our engines....AND SOME ADVERTISING OTHER THAN FINE PRINT UNDER THE NOZZLE WOULD BE GOOD!!!!

the service engine light is flashing, the car is sputtering...i have no power....and i dont have much money...im pretty much effed in the a as some would say......
BrdWAtti2d
I doubt it's the ethanol. Get it scanned and find out what code it's throwing.
Da97Bandit
im getting skeptical now too....i think i burnt up my wires on the headers...again
SassySue09
With my Bosch plugs, I took them back to the parts store and got the ones I'm running now.

Matt, I never said for him to get the stuff from Comp Cams, I just told him to call them and get their recommendations on what would be best for his car. Once he has that info he can get the items he needs from wherever he wants. wink.gif

Da87Bandit - the 10% ethanol won't have anything to do with whatever is wrong with your car. The majority of gasoline now sold in this country has ethanol in it usually in the 10% range, plus I know since I've had my car almost all the gas I've run in them has had 10% ethanol in it and I've never had an issue with it causing problems with any of my cars. About the only thing I have noticed is that with the ethanol in the gas I get a little bit less gas mileage then I do when I'm in an area where I can get gas without it in there.

If it does turn out though that you've burnt up another set of plug wires what you might want to do is instead of running them in the stock position is to run them over the valve covers. You'll need over-the-valve-cover wire looms and longer plug wires to do this but it'll keep the wires away from the headers and you won't have any problems running the wires from the plugs to the opti this way either.

Good luck and let us know what you find.
Da97Bandit
had autozone run the code....multiple random cylinder misfires....which means its another set burnt haha...but thank God only that...i thought it was gonna die on the ride home...But I am looking into the over the top set, but i think im gonna eat the 340.00 for the shorties, and buy a set of long tubes....Im just not in the mood to dump more money in and a month later the problem come back...ya know?
Da97Bandit
Sassy where did you get those turn signal covers for your 97? I really like the clear look...and are they legal? not that i care, just one less thing to worry about haha
SassySue09
Even if you do go with the LTs I'd still do the OTVC route with the plug wires since it's better to be safe then sorry.

As for my clear corners, I got mine from a club member here whose car had been totalled but I've seen them on eBay or if you'd rather go with brand new ones you can get them from AfterThoughtsAuto.com for like $50 a set.

amptuttle
Alright I know this is 9 months old and it just reminds me of that saleen clone, but did you ever end up racing that v6?
Da97Bandit
everytime i see him on the street, he turns at the next light...and if i walk in to the autozone he works at, he runs to the back....he is mature guy haha
MasterTomos
is his engine even still holding together after spraying?

Cant imagine those v6's have the strongest bottom end cuz I KNOW the v8's dont....biggrin.gif

Da97Bandit
I found out a few weeks ago that his system is only set to purge, it isnt hooked up to the engine...He takes it to car shows and purges for the crowd but thats about it....hahaha

He also just put a vortec supercharger in it...but im not worried....he wont man up and let me beat him....
