Aight guys my 97 LT1 has the DynoMax Bullet cat-backs. I looked on the DynoMax website and the full exhaust system gives the LS1 Firebird 32 hp. My Trish has the BBK shorty headers on her. Is it possible to get the LS1 exhaust on her?

Oh, hey...now I gotcha.... I mean, that's understandable. biggrin.gif Gotta take good care of them, that's for sure. Wish I could answer the question easily, but I can't. However, that said, any exhaust shop can modify any exhaust system to mate up with any header combination, so it shouldn't cost you too much and it shouldn't be very hard to get done. If you like the Dynomax, go for it.

However, I do want to add something. Don't buy into the manufacturers advertisements about hp gain. Modifications that are supposed to make more hp, don't add up. If the BBK shorty headers claim 25 hp (they more than likely make about 10 more hp) and the Dynomax widgets claim 32 hp on the website, that doesn' t make 42 hp total. What it does make is maybe a solid 15-20 hp, and that is really good! Even the very best tubular headers, such as SLP only claim 17 hp with a free flowing exhaust and most reputable exhuast system makers won't even quote hp gains. Check out Borla, no claims at all, but I can assure you they do work as advertised.

Borla doesn't give a HP number it says you will gain from 5-15% in HP and then says in a racing application thier XR1 collector muffler is beter than an Open exaust.

The above comes right from the FAQ section of Borla's homepage.

so if you make 300HP they say (in a percentage) you will gain 15-45 HP. That seems to be in line with what other reputable cat back manufacturers claim. I am a bit woried about anyone claiming a muffler will make more HP than open exhaust. Maybe it is due to the small amount of back presure it provides so scavenging is actually improved a bit.

Hmm. Flowmaster ,Dynomax, or Edlebrock do not give any HP claims either by number or percentage for thier mufflers or systems. at thier main page. Corsa (an awesome exhaust company) actually says thier C4 corvette mufflers get comparable results to competative products but thier systems allow up to a 42% exhaust flow rate over the others so you get less interior resonance. and thier C5 raise flow by 45%. No HP claims though.

Interesting

There are a couple of differences between the LT1 exhaust and the LS1 exhaust, the main things being the hangers and the way one part of the exhaust is routed under the car. But if you can get around those two things there really isn't a problem of running an LS1 catback on your car since other then those two the length and size of the exhausts are the same.

And I agree, don't take the HP numbers that companies put on their websites as the truth. I've found over the years that the majority of them are way over-rated and that what you'll actually see is usually a 1/3 to 1/2 of what they post. Oh and another thing, other mods that you have done to your car will also affect what the final HP gain will be. A totally stock car will make a different HP number with the exhaust then say one that has minor mods or one that has been highly modded. So take all HP numbers that are posted on any website with a grain of salt and don't be disappointed if you don't get as much as they claim.

Sweetness. Thanks guys. Yea I was figuring that the power gain was either sales gimmicking or maybe what it gives to the crank but not the wheel.
