It was a match made in heaven, the stuff Ricer gurus dream about. A hotrod 660cc Kei car vs a Scubaru Impreza Casa Blanca (means "limited edition") station wagon (5 door hatch). My car has the 110 hp 4 cam, 16 valve 1.5 liter, flat 4 cylinder engine and that guy was way overmatched. There we were climbing a hill when he looked at me and I looked at him. In an instant we were racing up the hill. Holy Hill, Batman, that guy really knew what he was doing. He was staying even with me. I mean there we were, my car and an econo-boombox 3 cylinder thingamajig painted piece of tin and my real car. Both our engines were winding out as hard as they could...ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shift ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shift ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... and we hit 40 kph in about the time it took you to read this...well, maybe a bit longer. However, he clearly thought he had me beat, until I hit the "magic button"! It says "POWER" right there on the instrument cluster and it lights up in RED! Pushed the button and the mild mannered Scoobie was transformed. It actually downshifted and flew away from the kei car in an embarrassing rush of speed. I mean within about 5 seconds, it actually hit 55 kph! Oooooooooooooooo! I beat the guy by two car lengths. There is no subsitute for cubic inches. Let that be a lesson to any who question the Golden Rule.
I'm happy to report that street racing is alive and well in Japan. It's really slow racing, but it is alive and well.
