When I accelerate my car briskly, the shift knob goes skyward about an inch or two. Me and my buddy, a mechanic, looked at it and I torqued the tranny a little while in gear and the whole transmission itself is not loose. Could it be a bushing getting old or what? Any ideas?

I had this happen to me just before my tranny mount let go. Get the new polyurethane one and never fear it again.

Definately sounds like a tranny mount...should be around $20 for a stock replacement, $35 for a polyeruathane one...have sumbody look under the car while its on and preload it a little like u where gunna do a powerbrake...you'll probably see the rubber part on the mount either tear or completely seperate...if this is the case, jack up your car and then get a 2nd jack(I used the stock scissor jack) to hold up the tranny. Unbolt the arm over the rear of the tranny (6 bolts I believe) and pull down the arm, the mount will be held in by 2 more bolts...at this point you should be able to tell how messed up it is...replaceing it is simple and pretty self explanatory once u look at it...about a half an hour job in labor when you've got the parts depending upon the tools you've got...I just did it in the driveway...did that and a fuel filter in about 45 minutes...however, I did put a polyeurathane one in and it made my car feel like crap(lots of vibration) around 2 grand, so i took it out and got a stock replacement...it feels much better to me...

Make sure when you install it you pull the rear of the tranny back to center when you tighten it up. This may cause the vibration that was explained above. If the drive line is too far out of alignment, a vibration will occur. Plus it helps prolong the life of the U-joints.

I agree with Matt, if the tranny isn't put back to center after install of a poly mount can cause some major vibratiion problems. But even if it is centered, due to the fact that a poly mount is "harder" then a stock mount you will feel some extra vibration through the steering wheel. I know I did, along with other I know who have them, but after driving your car a while you get used to the vibration and don't even notice it anymore.
But to me that extra vibration is worth it with the poly mount which lasts what seems like forever as opposed to having to replace the stock mount over and over again, especially if you like to get on your car alot or like to do hard launches with it.
