Hi

The name's Caleb. I'm from Oklahoma

I'm 17 and I've always loved Firebirds. I don't come from a wealthy family though (even though I payed for it myself) so I was expecting to be driving a Taurus or something else... Luckily, my parents found me one when I turned 16. It's a '94, 3.4L V6, base model, blue. Pretty basic stuff, but I love it. I think these are some of the best American cars ever made.

I haven't done much with it. I changed out the air intake system. It made a pretty big difference actually.
I'm just getting started on modding my car so any suggestions are very welcome.

Hello and welcome to the source! Sounds like a nice bird you've got there, definitely be sure to put up some pics of it!! And you are right, they really are the best car in the world. I'm 21 and have already owned 3 firebirds :-D I started with a 1991 vert with the basic 305 V8 (very slow), then upgraded to the LT1, and now my LS1. Believe me, once you own a firebird, you'll never NOT want one and you'll always want to go faster.

I'd rather pour tons of money into my bird keeping it running than buy a newer car of any other make.

welcome.gif to TFS Caleb! I hope you enjoy yourself here and if you've got any questions either about your car or the site feel free to post them up. I'm sure that someone here will be able to help you out.

As for any suggestions, I've got one - before you start doing any major modding to it, especially engine wise, look around and be sure you can find someone who'll be able to tune it for you once you're done. I'm suggesting that because there used to be a guy in the car club I'm in that had a 3.4 and he modded his car before he found someone who could tune it for him. After he modded it it took him almost a year to find someone who could do the tuning and do it correctly because he could only find a couple of places that would even attempt to try and tune it, much less tune it correctly.

But some simple mods you could do besides the air intake system are the exhaust, brakes/rotors, tires, synthetic fluids through out the car (oil, tranny, rear differental, etc.), upgraded battery, etc. Just start with the basics and work your way up from there.

Thanks for that suggestion

Is it actually difficult to find a mechanic to work on a Firebird? I've never taken mine in to get anything done.
My brother works at a garage and knows quite a bit about cars in general so I think I could find a place easy.

You're welcome for the suggestion.

As for working on them, finding someone to do work on them is easy if you don't want to do the work yourself but it's finding a person who can tune them and do it correctly that isn't easy especially with the 3.4 and 3.6 V6 cars. But since your brother works at a garage and knows something about cars you shouldn't have a problem then with someone doing work on it. The best thing I can suggest, whether you plan on working on it yourself or having your brother work on it is to get both the Haynes and Chilton manuals and also if possible getting the actual GM service manuals for it. The Haynes and Chilton manuals you can get at just about any auto parts store or decent bookstore, the GM service manuals for it can be ordered either through a dealer or from Helms, Inc. who makes the GM service manuals.

Ah, thanks for that. I've been looking for a good manual.
Great help this place is!

Welcome to the Source!

I have done a lot of research on the 3400 engine. I have found a lot of useful information. It is a very strong engine and can be modded with some great success. Problem is, ALL of the information is on my tower at the shop after my house got flooded and I can not access it for a bit. I do remember that I found high flow heads and turbo setups that will get it in the 400hp range on a very basic tune. I hope to have all o that back soon.
