Full Version: T-top / Window Leak

I consider myself lucky. My 94 has never really leaked unless going through a carwash - the typical 'drip' onto the driver's left leg that we're all familiar with.
Recently, it has gotten very bad. After a rain, I'll turn or brake a certain way, and here comes the water.
I read in another thread (Dec 2003) that it could be window alignment. I did have both window motors replaced in the past year. This other thread did not explain any further.
When I left work today after some serious rain, my seat was soaked. Not a fun ride home.
So, I guess my options are the window and all the TT seals, right? What's the best place to buy the seals if I go that route? I think I'd like to try the window first, though; seems like a logical first step.
Thanks in advance.

Actually before you spend the money on new seals and stuff, since you did have both window motors replaced this past year, I'd try adjusting the way the windows track and close first. The job is fairly simple and if you know how to use a few simple tools and follow the instructions in the link below you should have no problems adjusting them.

http://shbox.com/1/adj_window.html

Also be advised that it might not be the window out of adjustment or even the seals that are the problem. What could be happening, and I've seen it before, is that your doors are starting to "sag" with age and the doors themselves might not be lining up the way they should. What happens, over time and with age, is that the weight of the doors causes the hinges and the bushings in those hinges to "sag" and then the whole door and not just the window is out of alignment. One way to know if the door alignment is out of whack is if your doors open and close easily (they should do both if they hinges are fine) and when they're open if they are level (you can check that with a common spirit level alone the bottom of the door like you would with anything else you want to see that's level or not).

If the doors are level, I'd do the window adjustment first to see if that fixes the problem first before I'd do the seals. If the doors aren't level, unless you have auto body experience, you'll have to find someplace that you know and trust to replace the hinges for you since doing that isn't really something that a novice should do.

Once again, I am amazed and humbled by your knowledge!
Thank you!

I have not tried anything 'scientific' yet, but upon a quick inspection, the door seems to close square (no play at all) and the window seems to close tight against the t-top. No wind noise. I still have to try the dollar bill test on both windows.

I will look into it further this weekend. Hopefully I can A. park the car on a level surface to test the door, and B. it will STOP RAINING long enough to try what you suggest.

It is WAY worse toward the back; my seat belt and whole left side of the driver seat get soaked.

You're welcome.

From the sounds of it, it sounds like the back of the window needs to be adjusted up more then the front of it does. But just go through the steps that are listed from the top to the bottom of the list on that link and I'm pretty sure that it'll fix your problem cause sometimes when the window motors are replaced they aren't put back in at the exact same place on the gearing that the old motors were and that can cause the window not to close correctly and seal properly.

But good luck and let us know how you make out.

And I know what you're talking about with the rain, I washed my car Wednesday morning and that afternoon it started to rain and has been raining on and off since. dry.gif I think I'm going to quit washing my car cause everytime I do that's what happens - it rains and keeps raining for days. laugh.gif

Well, I went to a body shop and a glass guy, and they both said it's the seals. They both did the dollar test & the glass guy did the water test.

So, can someone recommend a reputable, reasonably priced source for t-top weather stripping? Please don't even bother if you're going to suggest Young's F-Body. They are a rip off.

thanks

So they're sure it's the weatherstripping/seals then? Did you do the adjustments and the other things listed in the link that I gave you above? I'm just asking cause it usually isn't until our cars are older when the weatherstripping/seals need to be replaced unless the person who had the car before you didn't take care of them properly.

But I'd check on places like Summit, Jegs, Thunder Racing, Speed Inc and even GMPartsDirect for new ones. But no matter where you get them from they're not going to be cheap.

Bringing this one back from the dead...

I've had that same leak (the one toward the front of the drivers side door as you go through the laser wash) since I owned my car. No big deal.

Now, all of a sudden, I can hear wind noise at the rear corner of the driver's side door...and it's a DELUGE in the laser wash (thats when I found out where the wind noise was coming from...lol)

Door opens just fine, and appears square. The T-Tops are installed correctly. (I know that sounds funny, but I've seated them wrong before and that brought on some serious trouble.)

What needs adjusting when this happens all of a sudden? There hasnt been any trauma to the car at all, and it's an '02 so I would hope the weatherstripping is okay.
