Hi. Recently my trip odometer has stopped working. Not the end of the world alone, but, like many of you, my fuel guage sucks!
I have been using the trip to notify me when I need fuel. Now I have to write down the actual mileage in a little notebook and keep an eye on it.
So... to the question... Is the trip odometer repairable? I'm guessing it's a broken tooth or something. I know you can't get to the actual main odo. Can I buy one off eBay and swap out parts? I'd really rather not replace the whole instrument cluster. All other guages (except fuel) seem to function okay.
If I did choose to replace the whole thing, is there any legal way to set the odo. to my true mileage? 201,000 and going strong!
thanks in advance

As far as I know there is no way to change out just the trip odometer especially if you've got the digital dash. Sorry.
But before you do that, take the panel apart and check on the back of the gauge cluster for the wiring for it. It's just a plug in wire for it and I've seen it before where the clip that holds the wiring pigtail in break and cause the wire to back out of where it should be. If that's the case all you'll need to do is plug it back in and figure out a way to keep it in place so that it doesn't back out again.
As for resetting the mileage thing, I know where I live, all you've got to do is note that the whole cluster has been replaced, make a note of the true mileage of the car on a piece of paper and have that paper notorized and then attach that paper to the title of the car so that if you do ever sell the car the true mileage of the car is noted with the title and you can't be charged with falsifizing the mileage.

Just an update. I finally got around to totally removing and disassembling my gauge cluster to get to the trip odometer (quite a job getting the outer bezel off!!!)
Anyway, I found the culprit: a small plastic gear about the size of a nickel had a crack in it and subsequently broke into two right in my hand.
The best solution I have found is a 94/95 cluster on eBay for $30 + 15 shipping. I called a local junkyard and asked if they had any odometers. They wanted $100 plus my old one! Even if that was for the whole cluster, it's still steep.
$45 may seem like a lot just to replace this tiny piece, but the alternative is having to write my mileage down at every fill up.

i know what you mean about the dash, i'm not looking foward to it when I convert my interior from grey to black. you feel much better when the little gear thing is installed.
