I hate to say this but unless he's got the metal tag with the key code on it that came with the car when it was new and should be in the owners manual the dealer won't be able to make him a new key if I remember right. So his only options as far as I know are either to get a new ignition switch and the key that goes with it, or if he can find a locksmith that carries the keys with the resistor in them he can go that route and have the locksmith reset the ignition switch for a new key. But either way that he goes it's not going to be cheap.

One thing he might want to do once he gets the new keys is to get an extra one made and give it to someone he knows and trusts for safe keeping. That way if this happens again in the future he'll be able to get into his car.

The locksmith here can scan the ignition and get the code, then reverse engineer the key - EXPENSIVE. Or you just replace the ignition, put the tag in a safe place with a photocopy of the keys - NOT SO EXPENSIVE. Next time they can fix it no problem.
