I have a fire bird formula 350. I need new brakes for it, but every time I buys brakes they rub against the tire. I have tried american brakes and Chinese breaks. Has anyone had this problem and know how to fix it or what kind of brakes i need. I have the old WS6 package. I have tried everything. My local mechanic doesn't know what to do either. Any advice is more than welcome

I dont see how this is even possible. Do you mean the caliper rubs the wheel? Can you post a pic?

the rim is rubbing on the housing that the strut sits in. It actually took the tire weights off the inside of the rim. i don't know if there are supposed to be spacers behind the rim or if the rotors that they sold me are wrong.
Tyler
If the rotor fits up in the caliper it should not matter. Was something else dieassembled at the time? What kind of wheels do you have?

Ok, I think I know your problem. Pontiac Firebirds and Camaros from this age used two different wheel offsets for the front and the rear. To repeat, they used two different wheels--one that only fit the front and the other that only fit the rear. I thought by 1989 that this was discontinued, but I guess not. If someone rotated the tires and the wheels and put the front tires/wheels on the back, the wheels will rub on the callipers. You need to switch the front to the back and the back wheels to the front. Also, check that your car doesn't have say...one front wheel on the back and one rear wheel on the other side of the back and the same for the front.

In order to rotate tires. The tires have to be removed from the rim and then moved...the wheels have to stay in the position that they were designed for.

Hope this helps.

Thats what I was getting at to. I know the GTA style wheels are like this but I was not sure about any other Firebird wheels.

It could be like both Me Too and Tyler said that the rims are on the wrong end of the car. On the 87-92 Formulas the backspacing for the front and the back are totally different so if the fronts are on the back and the backs on the front you will have rubbing issues.

Here's the backspacing for both the front and the back:

Front: 4.75"
Back: 5.25"

Hope that helps you out.

On the GTA wheels the deeper dished wheel goes on the front. It seems like it would be opposite. Also,on the inside of the wheel there should be an "F" or FRONT and an "R" or REAR stamped in it.
