I unsuccessfully attempted to install my new xplod unit into my 87 firebird today. After I thought I got the wiring hooked up right I hooked the battery back up and shortly heard a pop behind the unit when I was trying to turn it on (exposed wires touching I believe) and all of the interior lights now no longer work. A 10A fuse for the radio was blown which I replaced, with no effect, but I can't seem to find where the fuse is for the interior lights. Anyone know what that fuse is called? Otherwise I think the main problem is I'm not sure which wire behind the radio is which. The instructions tell me which what is coming out of the radio but I don't know which ones to hook them into. I'm pretty sure I've got the ground, ignition, and main power supply right but the unit does not turn on. Anyone have some kind of guide that can help me figure out what each wire is called and is for?
Also I am struggling with the names of the speakers. Are the two speakers on top of the dash called front speakers or compartment speakers? And the two on the side panels just behind the doors are the rear speakers right? And if the the dash speakers are called front speakers what do I do with the compartment wires?

Do yourself a favor and go to Walmart or stereo shop and pick up a wiring harness for your car. Then you can hook the harness up to your factory wiring and plug the new unit right in. It's so easy a caveman could do it.
Check all of your fuses cause one is still shot.

Alright well I'm not sure what I did but I managed to get most of it working now. I got the radio and speakers figured out. Now the two problems are the interior lights don't turn on when the ignition is off. When the ignition is on they work perfectly. Also, when the ignition is off the radio must lose complete power because when I turn the ignition to turn the radio on the time is reset and it doesn't remember the stations i had programed. I tried swapping the battery and ignition wire (yellow and red) but nothing changed. Any ideas?

Something isn't right with your wiring. Sounds to me like you've got a problem with your yellow battery wire. If you don't do it right, it won't store any presets or programmed info like time and date. Go back and check your connections. And once you figure it out, i would take the wiring out completely and use a soldering gun to make sure the wires don't come undone, and then wrap each one with electrical tape to make sure they don't come into contact with anything else. Definitely sounds like a wiring problem behind your HU, i would put my money on it.
