Hey,
I have a stock exhuast on my 1996 Formula WS6. First off, is that the same exhaust as a stock non-WS6 exhaust or is the WS6 exhaust different?
Also, I'm looking at just getting the Borla ProXS universal muffler that has the same single inlet/dual outlet as my stock one. The Borla is a little smaller overall though. Can't swing for the full cat-back at this time.
Main question - Will this ProXS muffler with the rest of the exhaust kept stock be any louder? I dont need to change it if its gonna sound the same. I just like every Borla system Ive heard and I want some more growl.
So...does anyone have or heard just the Borla muffler added and not the cat-back? Is it better sounding than stock WS6 muffler?
Thanks!

Heres my answer as posted from LS1Tech
For your year IIRC the muffler is slightly less restrictive but the pipe sizes are the same `99- 02 WS6's had larger tailpipes and different round tips
`98's are the oddball year with a single 3.5" tip on the Left
`96-97 WS6's could also be optioned with the SLP dual on the left and the dual dual (97 only) Same systems were standard on Firehawks of the same vintage.
I have no experience with the Borla Pro Mufflers so I can only assume it will be louder them the stock setup.

Id assume borla would be much much less restrictive...
stock these cars are pretty quiet

I'm not sure on that exact model by Borla, but I am pretty sure that the only aftermarket that is more restrictive than stock is the Flowmasters, so my guess is that it would be louder. Borla really isn't an exhaust company that's main target is just being loud, but they shoot for the more "refined" exhaust note. Try it out and see how you like it!

Most loud Borla's you heard were tunable cat-backs left wide open. Borla usually has a low tone at idle and a nice note in the upper ranges without being over bearing.
Try it, or start saving for the whole kit.

where can you even buy just a borla muffler?

Summit sells Borla Mufflers.
But IMO I would just wait save the money and buy a decent catback.
Changing the muffler is more about sound then horsepower anyway, even though most catbacks only show about a 10 to maybe 15 RWHP gain.
The big problem is when you decide to get LT headers, because LT's and an ORY tend to make the best catbacks sound raspy. If you get a catted Y pipe it seems to pretty much eliminate the rasp. Depending on the inspection policies of yor State you may have to get a catted setup anyway.
But ultimately you need to listen to different setups with and with out headers and ORY's to make a good comparison.

Yeah...I like the borla sound. Its not too loud but at WOT sounds like a race car. Very sweet note.
But, I think all the ones I've heard were the full catback system. Not sure Ive heard just the Borla muffler alone. Thats why I asked the questions.
I figure itd be louder than stock but not as sweet as the catback. Thing is I wanna keep my Meachem tips so thatd be a waste for the Borla catback where theres come included. With just the muffler I could use my tips but I want that "Borla sound".

Thanks for the replies...
Well, I went with just the Borla muffler. I already have the Meachem tips that I like and I got a great deal on the Muffler. It's the one for this car, the Pro XS part number 40474. It listed from Summit and Jegs for about $280 and the cheapest I saw it elsewhere was $250. I got mine new from an Ebay store for $178 including shipping.
I can always add a cat-back later but this frees up some cash for some other things like a Pro 5.0 shifter maybe.
I'll let ya know how it sounds over stock with just the muffler.
