'93 Formula - Driver's side factory motor went out in 2004. Bought replacement from Dal (GM). Lasted a year. Bought new GM motor from A1 Electrical. Lasted about 2-3 years. Passenger side factory motor started going south in 2008, so 15 years of service.

On the driver's side, I replaced rivets with bolts. Greased tracks with lots of grease and replaced motor - twice now in the past 4 years. Both driver's and passenger side are super slow. I'm not even tempted to try and roll them down.

Just bought two brand new GM motors from A1 along with 2 sets of 30 amp relays. I had read on another forum a year or so back that adding relays into the circuit helped ensure a full +12VDC to the motor (or +14VDC engine running) would improve performance and not force the motor to work as hard. I have been trying for months to find that post to no avail.

Anyway, the plan is to replace the motors, clean & re-grease tracks, and install the relays for up and down on both sides. Then replace the window tinting I scratched the last time. I ordered some SXL heavy duty 10 gauge wire to provide power and clean ground. That's the only thing holding me up at this point.

Any new tips, tricks, info, suggestions, comments, complaints on getting RELIABLE power windows on these cars?

Thanks,
E.

I can't remember where i bought mine from, but i got 2 new window motors with a lifetime warranty on them. I have yet to have any problems with them since, although it's only been 2 years, but at least i know i'm covered. I will try to find out where i bought them from.

I got mine (both) from autozone. They are like $70 each, and have lifetime warranty. Really beats the dealership pricing which only includes a 12,000 mile warranty.

So what is the best grease to use on the slides?
- Wheel bearing grease
- White lithium grease

So, it looks like based on my thread, I did the work around this time last year. Well, the driver's side window wouldn't go up last week. I had to make 3 separate attempts to get it all the way up.

I did all the work I described with dual relays on each window and new wiring. So, it can't be that not enough voltage/current is getting to the motors. The motors are from A1.

When I took the driver's side window out, one of the guide roller pegs that is riveted to the window rail was broken an barely attached. I figured that was binding up and causing the motor to work to hard. I replaced the rail with a new one from RMS, so I thought that was causing all the grief. But, it appears not. It is such a pain the rear to replace these motors. I just don't understand what the problem can be. banghead.gif mad.gif

Ok so I was having problems with mine too in the past. I bought the Autozone replacement motor, and replaced all of those rivets with bolts.
Two days ago my driver's side window went up about half way and stopped. Pulling the panels off showed that the window guide broke out of the rivet and was just hanging. I had to do a bit of custom fabrication but all in all, its fixed.

I doubt it is your motor, since its only a year old. Being that mine is a convertible, I dont have the guides that hard tops and t-tops have, so when I roll the window all the way up, I can pull on it from the top to see if there is any play. Try rolling the indow up just enough that you can get your hands on the top of the window and wiggle it around.

I would take a close look at all of your connections from the window to the regulator, which is that entire mess of gears and brackets and rivets. Chances are, something isnt connected and/or something is busted on that regulator. In which case, if I could fix it myself, I would because replacement on those things are not only retarded expensive, but a pain in the butt to replace.

I'll check for play in the window assembly, but pretty much everything is new on the driver's side except the window glass and the spring assembly. So, I'm not clear on what might be loose.

Your last paragraph indicates something is broken in the regulator. I assume you mean the spring and gear assembly that the motor mounts to. I checked mine for cracks and wear when I had it out the last time. I applied a liberal coat of grease as well. You really can't inspect it easily unless you take the stupid thing out.

I'm very frustrated with this problem. It just won't go away and it a huge effort to take apart and install. sad.gif

Same here, cheap and a lifetime warranty
