Full Version: Wrapping the exhaust

Hello All,

So I bought my 1989 Formula 350 and it has some pretty bad exhaust leaks and wont pass admissions. My good friend Shane said that we should try wrapping it with some exhaust wrap that I could buy at schucks just so I can pass admissions and then later on redo the exhaust.

Is there any types of exhaust wrap that would better hold in the leaks better than others and do you think that if I wrap up the leaks it will pass?

Hate to say it, but exhaust wrap will not solve an exhaust leak problem, epecially a major leak. These exhaust leaks, do you know where they are coming from in the pipes? Do the pipes have actual holes in them or is it just because the clamps are lose? Unless the leaks are before the cats, you should be able to pass emissions because it's not going to produce more toxic fumes than with those leaks fixed...that would be an inspection issue.

They stuck the sniffers in my pipes and with the car running they couldn't get an accurate measurements beacuse of the leaks.
Not enough exhaust to messure properly..

Thus leading to a visual inspection and the finding of the wholes PRE cat.

Im going to try and patch it up with the DFI Exhaust wrap that will take the temps. and hopfully block 80%+ of the airflow that is being leaked out..

I have 4+ 1-3" rusted holes.

Wow, that sounds like you should just repair it now. A good shop can do it in a few hours and should not cost too much.

So we jacked up the car and there where alot more holes than I thought there where. I bought some exhaust repair stuff and when we where about to try and get it patched up we decided to say screw it and just take off the catback...

We got every bolt off except for the part that is right above the right wheel. It is hooked on with 2 bolts which one looks like there is no way we can get it off. The left side was helf on by like a strap and all I had to do was get one bolt losse and it come off. The right side however like I said is held on my 2 bold and the exhaust looks like there is a thing that just goes into what is like a hole and should just come out, but a part of the exhaust hits the undercarrage and looks impossible to get off. I'm a little stuck on how to get it off.

Any Ideas? Probably didnt make to good of a visual. I'll take some pictures when I get home.
