i have a 91 formula 5.7 tpi..all stock except for B$M shift kit running 30% tread lol on street tires...i weigh about 155 lbs and the car is an automatic..has roughly 163k miles....what time range should i be in? anyone have an idea???
SiberianFirestorm
I would say low 14's high 13's. It depends on track conditions and how well you can launch and keep traction with street radials.

I dont think it will run much faster than a mid to high 14 if that...those engines just arent that powerful

I agree with Tom. Those motors didn't push an outrageous amount of power. And from what I've seen locally, you won't be seeing great times unless you've done work.

Where do you live ? because elevation has a much bigger effect on Track times then most people realize.
Up here in Michigan Stock 350 TPI's average in the high 14's. with a couple mods though they can reach mid to low 14's easily.
Those engines make great low and midrange torque but the problem is that they tend to lay down above 4500 rpm. The good thing is all that can be addressed by installing a few pats to help the engine breath at higher rpm. SLP used to have a 300 HP kit that included Bigger Runners Headers a Catback and CAI.

My advice is Go to the track and have some fun. Don't try too hard to be fast just enjoy wringing the car out. Let us know the outcome (keep your timeslips) and we'll see if we can help you get faster withot spending any money.

Heres a couple simple tips before you go
Don't do a huge burnout or drive through the water box always go around the box and do a quick spin of thetires to clean them off.

Don't hammer the throttle out of the hole because too much tire spin will kill your E.T.
When the last yellow light flashes just put your foot down progressively till you reach WOT.
And leave the shifter in 3rd not OD.

Good Luck
Tyler
I'm guessing low 15's. Once you make a few baseline runs drop the rear tire pressure to around 15psi and raise the front to around 45 psi and try it again. If you can change all the oils to synthetic and drop maybe another tenth. You can remove the air filter to for a little quicker run but be sure to put it back in when your done. When ya going?

Better get some new rubber on first or you"lle be doing a John Force burnout instead of a launch! burnout.gif
MasterTomos
Yea, dont do a big burnout...spin the tires for a just a few seconds to get them warm before you make your first pass...after you've made your first pass, you probably wont need to spin them again...

put it down into 1(if you have a automatic) and ring it out as long as you are comfortable and ease into the throttle...(kind of the squeeze, dont pull theory with a gun trigger) and shift into drive, get into full throttle by the first half of 2nd gear...from there on its pretty much common sense, just hang on and enjoy the ride! gears.gif

Put shifter in 3rd and leave it there. Believe me the car can shift faster and with more consistancy than the driver can.

i went today and i live in florida..it was about 70degreese at the track...my car just wouldnt shift into third gear so i was letting off the pedal so it can shift but when i did and hit the pedal again it stayed in 2nd gear and took a few taps of the pedal to get it to shift which slowed my time ALOT. and my timimng was all out of wack so i just turned the distributor till it seemed okay but it idled with a julting pulse.. but heres my best times..

if i had a timing light to get the timing better and a good tranny i would of done alot better but i killed everyone out of the hole but they started coming back about 3/4 the way down the track cuz my tranny wouldnt shift...

oh yah, there was a guy there running a 97 trans am...15&16s all day i beat him ...but i did have a 100 shot...no jk lol need a new tranny and converter..my converter knocks really bad when im stopped and its in gear...dont think the track helped it any either.
MasterTomos
wow thats pretty impressive for a near stock 3rd gen...

a 97 TA running 15's and 16's? are you kidding?
either somebody REALLY can't shift, he's got major mechanical problems, or it was a v6 with a custom TA appearance conversion...
those LT1's should b good for high 13's stock

Your trans and converter are about fried and you're spraying? That takes guts man. mullet.gif

Put the timing back to where it's supposed to be. Your ECM controls the advance and messing with it can cause a power loss. I tried the same thing on a friends `87 4bbl Formula and it would detonate badly.

Being in Florida (close to sea level) your times should be a bit faster but your still doing good.

R.T. is good
If you inprove yor 60' time your E.T. will drop accordingly.
Get your transmission issues taken care of and go back.

well i put my timing back to stock a while ago and it completely SUCKED...i seriously had like a 12 sec 0-60 time no exaggeration. it ran really crappy, slow, sluggish...so i have to keep the timing at like 11 degreese for it to run okay...
SiberianFirestorm
Nice job. I am glad to hear it is running well. The times are pretty close to what I have seen from stock. You say the tranny and converter need help? Sounds like a good time to upgrade.
