Full Version: Where to add resonators or bullet mufflers?

morning guys/gals, haven't made time to post up any questions and changes to the bird lately, kinda in a money crunch and having to pull 2nd job. but saved up some money and purchased the magnaflow catback and waiting to install it.

question is i would like to add the bullet/chambered resonators to the catback. where would the best loaction be to add it? thought about the i-pipe or right before the exhasut tips. if i add them right before the exhaust tips i would have to change the magnaflow tips to something shorter.

is there any difference from the bullet mufflers (dynomax, glasspacks, etc) and chambered mufflers (gmmg, stainless works, etc)?

would there be a sound/tone change for the exterior/interior?

would the length in the bullet/chambered muffler change the tone also?

been checking the websites and youtube for vids for sound clips and installation process and getting advice. plan on getting all the parts before i install it myself. did a search on our fourms and if i missed the post on this type of question just point me in the right direction. thanks for all the help and support!!!

I would just install the catback and go from there.
The Magnaflow systems are known to be on the quiet side untill you mash the throttle.

9T8W66, thanks for the reply. just checking around to see if anybody had did the mod or heard of anybody doing this or something close to this. trying to look for that "deep" low aggressive sound. got to two mustangs in the neighborhood, one on each side of my house. every morning i have to hear both of there flowmasters. definitely not trying to copy them, i know that the LT1 will make a different sound anyways.

I think You will be happy with the Magnaflows deep rumble esp. on the LT1.
As for out doing the Mustangs you already did by buying a Firebird.

Yep, Magnaflows sound really nice on the LT1's. Not loud at all while idling, but really come to life when you get on the gas. Good quality of a product as well! Never heard of any complaints from them.

So you purchased a Magnaflow system? Have fun on the install, and for kicks you should take it for a spin around the block with no muffler before you put the new one on.
You should try to take a video clip of the exhaust if you have a camera able to do so!! I'd love to hear it!

alright guys...i installed it yesterday and man, i am sore today... laugh.gif laugh.gif took me about 5 hrs to complete (extra hour for over torqueing a bolt and snapping it off, had to wait on wife to get home with replacement). first thing i would pass on to somebody doing this mod by themselves is to have a "sawzaw" on hand. don't do what i did and use a hacksaw blade and cut through the stock pipe. took me about 1hr and some change to cut through it. second, try your best to do it yourself. you will have a deeper love for your bird when you bust that knuckle or skin that arm (like i did) but honestly i wouldn't change anything on my install. i love upgrading my bird and the time/exp i got out of it is priceless.

now for the sound...i love it, the sound/tone is deep. at idle it is mild but noticeable, driving at a steady speed the sound is very low and there is no drone inside. but at WOT it roars to life, man i love the sound.

now the sound with out the muffler is awesome, i should have taken her out on the road for a spin.. laugh.gif , i got small vid of the sound without the muffler and then with the new setup taking off and reving the rpms up. will try and post up shortly.

Congrats on getting the install finished!! I definitely agree with the advice on the sawzaw. I tried using a hacksaw at first with the flowmaster that was on my car, and i got about half way when it started giving me problems. I went and rented the sawzaw from Home Depot for really cheap, and man does it help! Can't wait to see the video!

you got to be kidding.........you can rent tools from Home Depot??????? laugh.gif well that advice will help on future projects, thanks.

thanks guys, now i'm working on what type of headers and ypipe to work toward? haven't done any research on that yet. any advice?

MasterTomos, i'm poor too!! took me a while to save up for the catback. priced around (jegs,summit,etc..) and the price was around $407.00, not counting shipping. ordered it off ebay for 330.00 from California with free shipping. saved me some money and the exhaust is genuine MaganFlow. read some post of the exhaust being sold for around the $250.00 to $280.00 mark but couldn't find that

i'll get the vids up as soon as possible, thanks guys.

Hacksaw huh.gif
Oh Yeah been there done that.
Takes more time to get the old setup off then hang and tighten the new one.

Anyway glad it all worked out for you and I agree there is nothing like the pride of doing the work yourself.

I always use an acetylene torch. Heat the areas around the bolts, and torch through the pipes. Quickest easiest way.
