Full Version: slipping tranny???

Okay so I started noticing this a little last year, and now noticed it again tonight when I was driving the car...when I was cruising at around 32 mph, I put it to the floor with the little transmission perform button pressed

...it downshifts into 1st and acts like its hitting the rev limiter (wasnt lookin at the RPM's, tryin to keep my eyes on the road cuz she tends to get a lil squirly in 1st floored without tread on the rear tires smile.gif )

but it pauses...it's loud, but the car doesnt move and the back wheels arent spinining for a second or two and kind of "jerks"...

would this be my tranny or rear end???
Im hoping the tranny cuz I have a 1 year warranty on her thats not up for a few months smile.gif

The tranny seems to shift the same otherwise, and ive never had problems with the rear end...at normal speeds/getting on it a little bit it acts fine like it always has...but once in a while(not every time) when it downshifts hard at highway speeds or like when I mentioned above it does this...its probably done it 5 times now...

suggestions/ideas? blink.gif

First step: Check the transmission fluid level. If it gets too low, it can cause the transmission to slip.

tranny fluid is golden...right on the mark where it should be

What color is the fluid? It should barely be red on the stick. Dark red means it's been hot, likely from slippage. The rear end wont do stuff like this. It will crack & pop when it messes up. My best friend's mom had a 75 Chevy P/U that slipped on the 1-2 shift pretty bad. I changed the fluid & filter and it stopped slipping. If your tranny was a rebuild and has not been changed since the rebuild it needs it if you have 10-15k miles on it.

the tranny fluid is light red...looks like it was just out of the bottle...and it was changed along with the filter when they put the new one in...

Hmm not sure what it causing this, it could be so many things (which is why i still haven't figured out the problem with my slipping tranny). If it's only when downshifting into 1st, it could be your 1-2 clutch band??? The only way to really tell if that's what it is, is to pull the transmission pan and check for clutch band particles. Easiest way to do this is to take the car to a place like Jiffy Lube and have them do a transmission fluid change...but it's like 100 bucks dry.gif

i wouldnt ever take my car to jiffy lube..i seen a thing on the news a while ago about them charging for some special tranny flush and fluid change..so the news planted cams on the vehicle being serviced and they never even touched it but still charged and said thats not the problem. I would just jack up the car get an oil pan for the fluid aand loosen the pan bolts from one side to another until the fluid all dribbles out from the pan tilting as u loosen the bolts...there will be some fluid still left so when u get it all the way off take a look and see if theres a gooey dark sometimes mixed with light grey substance on the bottom of the pan..thatd be the bands wearing then check ur magnet for metal flakes which is also inside ur pan..now if ur car is old or has high miles it will be normal for there to be a little bit of gooyness but if its caked on the bottom thick thats no good.

looks like Ill taker her down to my cousin's shop...they installed the tranny last year and my warranty for my tranny can work through them and the transmission place that built my tranny will pay for it...

Il prolly take her in when it warms up next...

^that works! And that's nice that you still have that warranty, makes it so you really don't have much to worry about!
MasterTomos
yea im gunna call tomorrow so i can make an appointment with them...but we've had freezing rain here in the last week with temperatures that have been changing anywhere from 60 to 0 degrees dry.gif

there's sooooo much salt on the road now...last week was perfect, all the snow melted, it stayed warm and rained a little, and it washed all the salt away....this weekend there was ice so they dumped a TON of salt on the roads, needless to say im gunna wait before i get the bird out again for a week or two...

ive got until april to get her looked at before the warranty is up...smile.gif so I should be good

Ya that salts wicked stuff, ecspecialy the liquid kind (brine). The Tin Worm, metal cancer. Thats why no way my Bird leaves the nest until the end of april. I wan't her still to be around for me when I retire. biggrin.gif
