Full Version: Long Tube Ground Clearance

So I want to upgrade the headers on my car and get rid of the crappy manifolds on there now. Problem is I'm afraid that the ground clearance if I put long tube headers on my car (94 LT1). I dont have the greatest suspension in the world which i plan on putting stock springs and shocks back in hoping that the car might raise a little bit. My question is will I see a major difference in power gains between mid-tubes and long-tubes? I am primarily looking at Pacesetter ceramic coated. Please keep in mind that I live in a city where the roads are garbage and i dont want tear the exhaust off.

Remember, concerns here are if I will have ground clearance with the long-tubes and if they offer a major difference in power gain over the mid-tubes.

Thank You

Pacesetters won't give you much trouble with ground clearance. But yes, you will see a significant difference between LT's and mid's, that's for sure. You should be fine with Pacesetters with stock height or close to stock height. As long as you aren't dropped 2 inches, you'll be fine.

Yeah the header setup will be lower then the stock exhaust but won't really be an issue with stock ride height.
Keep in mind that those long tubes do not come with a Y pipe.

Ok thank you. so ground clearance is good then.

But performance is much better on the long-tubes as opposed to the mid-tubes? i know that torque should be higher gains on the longs.

And is a true-dual system really worth it? again that is another issue with ground clearance.

Can someone help me with that?

MasterTomos
True duals can be run but its usually expensive and you usually gotta do some modification.

i know bassani sells true dual setups for 4th gen fbodies...but its over $1000 if I remember correctly and nobody uses it and there arent many videos of it....so its hard to make such a disicion on that little of information.

The other option is to re-do the rear panhard rod with an adjustable panhard rod, and a panhard relocation ba, allowinf for over the axel clearance for true duals.

Ive heard true duals on these cars, and it doesn't sound much better for the hassle you havta go through...not really worth it and the HP gains I cant imagine would be much better than a high quality catback.

or you could run long tubes, 6 inches of pipe, and a muffler on either side...which really effects ground clearance....

a few options...none of which are all that great really...

But if you can afford long tubes, do it.

Yeah tomos is right on the money with the TD setups. IMO there really is no right or wrong answer to TD's being "worth it" because it is all based on personal preference and how much money you have to spend. I have heard some TD systems that do sound completely amazing on these cars. The one i heard was a car with LT's, no cats and a true dual setup with Sweet Thunder mufflers. Another option you could do with the TD systems is dump them right before the rear axle. I think this is what tomos was talking about in his last option listed, and yes it will definitely effect ground clearance. If you go with 2 bullet mufflers, it won't be so bad.

If you don't lower your car, TD's wont be too much of a problem, just be careful for the speed bumps and steep driveways.

Here's a few pics of some cars with TD's to give you an idea:

Check out the clearance this guy has with his setup:

idk man, that 2nd pic would make me nervous. Prolly sounds killer but LLLow. unsure.gif

The 2nd pic is the same car in the 3rd pic. The 3rd pic shows a better shot of the clearance of the 2nd pic.

OK, cool ,3rd pic looks good. Guess it was just the angle of the 2nd shot that made it look so low. Dave.
