Hello all! I found this site while browsing the web for parts for my 1995 Pro Am III. I thought I would join since there has been a recent discussion building related to the Pro Am III. What I found the most interesting about this discussion is that I am in the same town as Terri B, and my car must be the other Pro Am III that Terri B sees from time to time. I have seen another Pro Am III in town from time to time, which must be Terri's.
My Pro Am IIIIt is a 1995 Formula Firebird Pro Am III, Limited Edition # 25. It has a 5.7L LT1 engine and a six-speed manual transmission, and it has T-tops. The paint scheme is two-tone red/silver. It currently has about 108,000 miles on it. Everything is all original, except I upgraded the original 16" five-star wheels to the 17" five-star chrome-plated wheels that SLP Engineering used on the 1995 Firehawk. I am the original owner and still have the window sticker with the paperwork showing the price mark-up and aftermarket conversion to the Pro Am III. I purchased the car from a local dealership in Louisville in December 1994.
Pro Am III DetailsI can vouch for the information that Terri B has provided regarding the company that did the Pro Am III aftermarket work. Custom Concepts was located at 6121 Airways Blvd in Chattanooga, TN. The Pro Am III package consisted of a non-functional Ram Air-style hood and ground effects. It also had special 16" five-star wheels and chrome exhaust tips. There were silver decals with small "Pro Am III" lettering on the sides of the hood scoop and on the driver-side head lamp cover, black decals with large "Pro Am III" lettering on the door inserts, and black decals for the rear bumper (Custom Concepts logo and lettering on the left side and small "Pro Am III" lettering on the right side). The ash tray cover also had a custom brass plate engraved to read "Pro Am III Series - Limited Edition # nnn", where nnn is the production number. To my knowledge, Custom Concepts made only 500 Pro Am III's, and less than 50 were Formula Firebirds. I am not sure how many of the 50 had six-speed versus automatic transmissions. Unlike Terri B's car, mine did not have decals reading “10th Anniversary Pro-Am Series”.
Pro Am III Company HistoryAt some point after 1995, Custom Concepts changed their name to Custom Fiberglass, Inc. They continued to sell the Pro Am III kit along with aftermarket hoods and ground effects kits for other car/truck models until they went out of business in 2001. During that time, they no longer offered the special wheels, the chrome exhaust tips, or the custom numbered brass plate. They also stopped offering the "III" with the decal kit, so it would just read "Pro Am". However, they would provide the "III" as replacement decals with proof that the customer owned a Firebird they originally converted to the Pro Am III. The company had a web site for customers to place orders. The web site is still up, but it is not maintained. Here is the link:
Custom Fiberglass, Inc.In 2002, another company called Fiberglass Fabricators, Inc. moved into the same address and bought the Pro Am III kit molds when Custom Fiberglass went out of business. They kept the same phone number as Custom Fiberglass to capture those customers. This is how I came into contacting Fiberglass Fabricators and learning this history. I was the first person who already owned a Pro Am III to contact them. I wanted to order a replacement kit, so I could install it at a later time if mine ever became damaged. They were starting up a new web site and wanted to use a picture of my car for their home page. Unfortunately, my cash situation got tight around this time, so I regrettably was not able to order a replacement kit. Their first web site was up until sometime in 2003. This was the link:
Fiberglass Fabricators, Inc.A couple of years later, I discovered they moved to a new web site. Unfortuantely again, I was not in a position to buy a replacement Pro Am III kit. This web site is up, but it does not appear to be maintained. Here is the link:
Fiberglass Fabricators, Inc. (New Site)In 2007, I was ready to order a new Pro Am III kit, but that is when I discovered the web site for Fiberglass Fabricators was no longer maintained, and their phone number was disconnected. I assumed they had gone out of business, and I would never be able to get a replacement kit. By this time, my ground effects and hood were showing significant wear (spider-webbing, cracking, etc). This must be around the time Terri B saw my car in a parking lot, based on Terri's description of the damage. In the past couple of years, I have had a local body shop (
Dents Dings and Colors here in Shepherdsville) do some minor repair work just to keep the ground effects on the car until I am ready to have the whole car repainted and the ground effects completely repaired.
Back to the Present...I have not driven my Pro Am III much this year. It has an electrical problem that I have not had much luck troubleshooting. The left turn signal stopped working about six years ago. The right turn signal stopped working about three years ago. The break lights stopped working all together this Spring. I was almost run into on a couple of occasions, so I stopped driving it for now. All of the bulbs are good, and I have replaced the flasher. The next thing I plan to try is replacing the entire tail light wiring harness if I can find a place to order the part.
I still search the web at times, trying to find out if Fiberglass Fabricators is still in business or if another company offers the Pro Am III kit. In 2010, I plan to totally restore my Pro Am III.
Anyway, that's my story... probably a little too much story! lol I'm glad to have found this forum, and I look forward to messaging with everyone!
