After racing different cars that all have different powerbands, it makes me wonder. Where does everyone feel a noticable decrease in how hard their car pulls? I start to notice mine at about 120...

And please, list what transmission you have. For reference.

Heh, heh, heh..... Racing? We don't do no stinkin' racin'.... I felt my powerband starting at 4,500 rpm with a 6spd manual. Didn't matter how gently the car was accelerated in a race, at 4,500 rpm it would tear the tires loose in first and spin them right up to the 6,500 rpm redline. All the gears were the same, except that in 4th, the tires merely scrabbled for traction instead of breaking them loose. New tires were somewhat stickier, but made more noise when they did break loose.

I sure do miss that.

120 ! ohmy.gif
I've never raced anybody to that high of a speed 110 in a 45 mph zone is enough for me. lol wink.gif

Honestly most of my street runs are done before 100 mph and we only go higher if a definete outcome warrants it.
And to tell you the truth I've never driven the car faster then 130 and it was still pulling hard at that speed.

120?!! Oh, heck no...more like 150 mph--it was a Mercedes, and a fast one at that (wasn't looking at my speedo at that speed, though). He lost.

Did shut down a BMW M5 just before selling the car. The loser was hitting the steering wheel with his hand--sore loser.

The fastest that the car ever went was around 155 mph, but wasn't racing anyone. There was lots more pedal left.

My LT1 still pulls hard, but I can notice a difference at about 120. All my races end up being in the 130 area. I do that to ensure that the other guy either knows he's lost, or know that I lost completely. No regrets if you go all out (unless your motor goes). Around here though...interstate pulls tend to be the best way to go about speed contests. I don't know if 120 just feels weird for me, or if the car is really losing part of it's pull. I've never gone past 130, and I'm always paying attention to the other driver's location rather than how hard my car has been pulling.

My Auto LT1 seems to plateau around 110-115ish (I know LT1's are low end torque motors, but should it be like this ive wondered?)

If Im racing by then Im usually so far ahead I don't need to keep accelerating anyway tongue.gif

A stock LT1 doesn't have much pull past about 5,800 rpm. By 6,100 rpm it's all over but the noise keeps pretty steady. The problem is not the cam, it's the breathing ability of the heads. 170cc intakes makes for low end torque, but it's the top end that suffers. A really good porting and polishing really wakes up the engine. The LT1 cam is a very good cam, very flexible with great low end torque and with the AFR Hydra Rev Kit it will wind up past 6,500 rpm. Add 1.6 roller rockers to the ported and polished heads and it is not hard to have at least 350 hp.

Before my cat died, I would lag at 120 and take forever to get to 150. After wards, it pulled hard al the way to 150.

I very rarely go that fast. I would rather do 1/4 mile runs. But on the street people try to push it. I've caught myself going way over 100 while caught up in a race. I really haven't seen the point on either my Cobra or Vette stops pulling. I normally don't race my Trans Am, so I don't know about it.

The fastest i've ever gone was 130 in my LT1 years ago...my T/A now I don't think i've taken over 115 but it was still pulling like a freight train up till i got off the throttle. If ya knew where I lived, and how busy it is with how many cops are swarming around, you would understand haha.

I live in a smaller town of 12,000. I drive 10 minutes north of town and I can do whatever I want.

On a 4 mile straight stretch of good even pavement my LT1 has been past the 155mph mark touching the volt meter for the battery.....
Ive read before they cut out at 168mph or something? I had to be close....

WOW ! ohmy.gif Back in my day 130 was about as fast as a street car could do, and then you were talking about a 'Vette or something. You've got guts Tom, beware though my friend, at those speeds anything can happen. unsure.gif

a good cross wind....i dont even want to think.....they built a new bypass for the local highway and my dad and i had to break it in....125 was all we got because some headlights came up in the distance...threw it in neutral and pumped the brakes a bit, passed the mini-van doing 75.....but it was dark...i do feel like with the LT1, it kind of just, doesnt put anymore out and just cruises after about 115....there is no pull, is tht wht everyone is talkin about?
Blu2000
Don't know about the LT1, seems like it should do better than that, but my factory stock 2000 LS1 has been to 120 about 4 times since ''03. It was still pulling strong, had to shut down because road was only 1 mile long. Here where I'm at roads are short, too many crossroads, and way too many cops. I feel if I had a suitable 2 mile stretch I could easily bury the speedo and safetly get stopped. And that's with 273 gears. Tempting unsure.gif but not worth the risk since I need my licsence for my job! Ohio roads S#&k mad.gif

yea, not something I do everyday, but had to do it just once...biggrin.gif

as far as the LS1 vs. LT1, they're completely different motors. LS1's have much much more high end power, it would definately pull more at 120 than an LT1.
LT1's make low end torque like mad, but they arent high end hp highway monsters like the LS1's which are designed more efficiently to begin with and have more HP to top it off (especially ram air at those highway speeds biggrin.gif).

Stop light to stop light tho, LT1's that hook up often walk away from LS1's at the line no problem. It's around 45mph where LS1's generally wave goodbye...
Blu2000
Ya, the LS1 makes all it's power at 3000 rpm and above.
