So I've seen other 3rd gens in the junk yard (and on ebay) with a hinged, plastic trunk lid. The 'lid' that came with my '89 is just a carpetted piece of wood that rests over the trunk area... no hinge or lock or anything. I couldn't find any hole were a hinge would connect, so my question: Did '89s really just come with a piece of wood to cover the trunk area, or do I have something funky going on with my 'bird?

I'm pretty sure wood has not been used in the production of a Pontiac since maybe the 1920's?

in the early third gens it was an option. if you lift your carpet in the storage area and look at the area opposite of the hatch lamp you will see 2 tac welded brackets that do nothing. those were for the mounts to attach the hinges for the compt lid. they later went to the hatch shade. the compt lid was lockable also BTW.
