Are you talking about what someone may have modified in the past or original equipment? Original equipment can be checked if you still have the RPO sticker on the driver's side door.

Short of tearing it apart a good tuner might be able to tell what mods have been done from a datalog, but that's still a guess at best. What makes you think it isn't just a run of the mill LT1?

SUPRISE!! yep i just called thedude that had it and he said the tranny was from a 95 trans am do you think that is why it has got no reverse

Unless he also upgraded the PCM and harness to a later model, yea that ain't gonna work so well. Take a look at the passenger side of the tranny just behind the servo, there should be a wiring harness, see if anything is connected to it. This pic isn't an f-body 4l60e but for illustration purposes it will do, it's the little green colored thingy. Without the harness connected the tranny would go into limp mode which would mean the car would start in 3rd with 2nd manualy selectable. You would have no 1st or 4th. Reverse should not be effected. Check the linkage cables and make sure they are connected properly, could be why you have no reverse.
