Is it an automatic or a stick?
If its an automatic it might be something with one of the sensors connected to the transmission giving a reversed reading of what it should be that needs a slight adjustment but in my limited experience if its electronic it will be slightly more expensive than you expect

Sounds like your range switch is just maladjusted. Adjust it and you should be fine. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace it. Hope this helps and God bless.
