Need some help please! Just bought an 89 formula as a project car. It will start, but die right after. I can keep it running if I hold the throttle open. I have replaced the fuel filter, and the pump is running . I am getting fuel up to the rails. ( How much pressure I do not know yet, I am trying to get a gauge.) I can not pull out any codes from the computer, for whatever reason a paper clip won't jump it. Anyone have this problem????

Thanks!!!

What pins are you jumping to get the codes?

u mit need a new IAC moter.when mine went out it would up fine but dye if i let off the gas.
87 formula
I have an 89 gta that did that at one time, it was throwing an egr failire, but it ended up being a throttle pos sensor change that fixed it and before the tps i found that the dist bushings were shot and changed those also. if i heald the gas about 1/4 down the car would start and when it was warm it would run on its own.

I'll try that next. Is there a way to test it?

Someone was telling me to check the egr valve too. I'll have to do that. I did swap out the tps and checked that. It wasn't that. Only thing wrong with the distributor was the cap and rotor, it was fu**ed. Replaced those, still nadda. I am thinking that I will keep it running up to op temp, and see if it will stay running like yours. If it does, Im leaning towards the iac as well. I still need to get a fuel pressure gauge though, and check it out. Thanks for that! Please keep any other help coming!!!!

It has a MAF sensor? Unplug it and see if it will run.

Yeah, tried that too. No jo.

Think I am going to try the iac. I can't believe it wont pull any codes!!! Really frustrating!!!

just pressure tested the fuel system. Reading 45psi. So...fuel pump is doing the job. Should I try the IAC? Anymore thoughts?

first try and see if your throttle is out of adj. being you have a no idle issue you will need a helper to re fire the car each time so you dont have to "in and out" every time.

first jump the AB pins as you have been, turn the key to the on pos and wait 30 secs. go unplug the IAC plug and then fire up hte car. turn the throttle blade screw in untill it runs and the idle is at 450 RPM. if you cant get the car to do this then its highly likely your IAC is bad. after you replace the IAC motor use the proceedure i just told you about to set the new IAC motor.

as for your not pulling codes, make sure you have a bulb in that postion or its not blown. some people will yank the bulb when the SES light comes on, there is a reason for the SES coming on, look into it and fix it as you are doing.
also check for vac leaks. all of those lil hoses running around the motor can have holes rubbed into them as iv seen on friends cars from time to time.
