Full Version: 5000 rpm miss

I just put on a set of subframe connectors. I took the car out for a test drive and all of a sudden I have a 5k rpm miss. When I hold it to the floor to see if it will pass, it sounds like a rapid fire gun going off. Below that runs and starts perfect. It has never done this. I have a handheld tuner that I set the rev limiter to 6500 years ago. Any ideas.......Thanks

Maybe just a coincidence. Try this trick: disconnect the battery for about one minute or more, then reconnect. Start the car and then immediately drive it and try to bring the engine up to the shift point. If it got better or revved a bit higher then settled down after about 15-20 miles, to its new misfire, it's the PCM and it must be replaced. If not, then it's more than likely a bad spark plug or ignition wire.

Also, is the SES light on--can the DTCs be read?

Ill try that. Also no lights dont know about codes.

If the engine runs better for maybe 20 miles and then goes back to its bad old ways, chances are the PCM is defective. However, according to me it is probably defective, according to others, that might not be the answer. In fairness, try looking for other things that could have failed, and replace the PCM as a last resort. The OBDI PCM, might or might not throw a code--if the ignition missfire is due to a spark plug, it won't throw a DTC for a misfire, but could throw one for a rich running O2 sensor.

I'd like to recommend that if you have to replace the OEM PCM, do it with a 1996+ OBDII rather than the present OBDI. The OBDII is about 3 X as powerful, with 3 X the memory and is 32 bit vice 16 bit. It will connect right into your wiring harnesses, but certain electronic switches within the PCM must be turned off--switches like the crank sensor, 3rd O2 sensor and so on. This can be done by pcmforless.com and you can have any other custom tuning bits that are needed done at the same time. Your engine should gain about 10 hp from the conversion. This was done for my car--went thru a half dozen rebuilt OBDI PCMs and they all failed (failure was always "cpu fails to communicate with the buss"). After the conversion (as simple as disconnecting the battery, clicking in the harnesses and tightening two 10 mm bolts), the engine never ran so well...not even when new. Since pcmforless will use the correct software for your car and the new PCM will have your VIN number, the engine can still be serviced by Pontiac.

Is there a thread you can direct me to on this subject? I would like to read up on this.
Thanks

Is there someone in the Sacramento/Auburn ca area that has a code reader for a 95 LT1. Mine has the obd2 connector inside. Im laid off but I am willing to pay a fair price. Thanks
