I have posted some threads on how to shift but I still dont get it on how to shift.  I have an 700r4 auto transmission and I still cant seem to find out how do shift it manually.

To shift an auto manually, you start it off in 1, then when you run out of rpms, push it to 2nd and same goes for D then OD.  If you really want to shift it manually, put a manual valve body in your trannie.

But how about when my car is already moving how would I shift then?
DARK SDE
You don't.  I fairly certain shifting an auto while already in drive will tear the #### outta your tranny.  In fact if you check you'll see that you can't go back into 1-3 without pushing in the button on the auto shifter.  I think you can only shift up manually in an A4.  At least mine seems to be that way.  So the lesson is, if you have to push the button in the car shouldn't be moving.  Just a note my car will only let me go back and forth between neutral and drive without pushing the button in.  But if you start in a gear, lets say 2nd, you can go up to 3rd then Drive (4th + overdrive), but not back down to 1st gear.

I recently stomped a Maxima off the line by 3 cars before I turned while only in 1st....I rule!! tongue.gif

So if I was going 30mph or any speed I cannot shift no more?

Bandit, I wouldn't shift it once you're going. Like Dark Sde said, you do that you will tear the *&^* out of your tranny. Once in drive, leave it there!!!! If you're going to manually shift it you have to start from a dead stop. And I know it's been talked about on here before, but an automatic can shift itself faster than you can.

sorry guys but not true. I have built a ton of trannies, and you can shift up or down as long as the RPM's are correct. The button does need to be pushed to downshift but like darkside said you just push it forward to upshift. If you start in 1 you just push it forward when the revs are high enough. It will stay in 1 until you do. if you over rev it in any gear you can damage it and blow out seals. on some of the 93's there was a bolt under the center console to make it impossible to shift into 1 because in 1 they wouldn't pass noise (driveby regulations). These trannies can handle a good amount of abuse and manual shifting an auto is better with a shift kit, but it isn't as bad as everyone says. Yes it will tear up the friction plates in the gear your in as excessive slippage occurs but not to the point that your going to kill it right away. I wouldn't suggest doing it on a daily basis because like i said it will prematurly burn out the friction plates, but once in a while will not hurt it as long as you do not over rev the engine. I worked for Suburban Transmission in Waltham Mass, and West Roxbury Trans in  dedham Mass.

If Doug has built just one transmission, he knows more about it than me, but I will say this.  My stock A4 will let me shift up or down without touching the button.  The only time I have to press it is when I am taking it out of park.  I don't shift at all manually for acceleration, but when I ride through my neighborhood I will bump it down to 2 when going about 20 mph to slow down a little, plus the gurgling sound it makes is music to my ears.  I never do it at any rpm higher than about 2,500 for fear of tearing it up.
