Full Version: 93-94 steering wheel controls FIX!!!

I found the fix for the steering wheel radio controls on the 93-94 Firebirds.  It's actually pretty easy and it's FREE.  The problem is there are rubber plungers under the buttons that activate a small push down switch when you push on the buttons.  The plungers in mine when melted for lack of a better word.  All I did was take the air bag off the steering wheel (be sure to disconnect the battery first).  There are four torque head screws that hold the air bag to the steering wheel.  Then disconnect the wire for the horn, the connector for the air bag, and the connector for the steering wheel controls.  Once you have that out, there are four more torque screws that hold the metal bracket that mounts the buttons the bracket.  Once you have the bracket off the air bag you'll have to take the buttons off the bracket , two screws on each side.  Now that the buttons are off the bracket you'll need to take the buttons apart.  Two more screws in each button for a total of four.  Now that the buttons are apart take a paper clip and clan out the holes where the plungers are.  It was pretty messy being that there were all melted.  Once you have the holes cleaned out find a staw that comes with a can off WD-40 or spray cleaner.  They are usually really thin and red.  Cut off a small pice (and I mean SMALL) and put it in one of the holes and put the button part of the buttons back on and try it.  If it's the right length you should here the switch under the button click.  You can even run it back out the the car and try it to make sure it's working.  Once you get the right size, just keep cutting the straw till you get them all filled.  Then just put it all back together. Took me all of about ten minutes to fix a problem that I've had for about 4 years now.  If you have any question feel free to drop me a line.  Also let me know if it works or ya.  GOOD LUCK, and your welcome.

i tried your fix and i worked great the only thing i did different was i used the head of a finishing nail instead on the wd-40 straw.  My thoughts were if it gets hot enough in ther to melt that rubber it could do the same with a plastic straw.  thanks again i now have working steering wheel controls again.

oh i almost forgot any suggestions on what bulb goes in the buttons? i have one that is out and would like to replace it

I'm not 100% sure but it looked like the same one that is used in the door switch lights and I know it's a 74.  Glad the fixed worked for ya.  It's cool havung the controls back. biggrin.gif

trying to remove those 4 screws but the bottom two are stripped. I realize this probably isn't the best thread for this question but can anyone tell me how to get these out? and would a gm parts department be able to replace them with 2 that aren't stripped?

I have never had any issues (yet) with my steering wheel controls on my 93. Sounds like a good fix though if it ever happens.

Craig, I looked at your site, and it said "COMING SOON" and there was a list of mods. Are those mods you will be doing in the future or have you already done them. is your engine/heads/cam stock, and you just run NOS???

I spent about an hour and a half tonight on this, I was a little afraid of the airbag, however I did get it finsihed. The FIX is great!! I can't believe my buttons work now!!! This is so cool. Thanks for the wonderful instructions, and to everyone thanks for the great message board!

You should always disable the airbag by pulling the fuse and disconnecting the bright yellow connector under the steering column. Even with that done it still creeps me out. I always feel like the guy in the movies trying to disarm the bomb seconds before it explodes, hmmmm green wire or red wire......"clip".....BOOM!!

LOL Thanks for the info, if I have to pull it again I will do that stuff. I didn't even know, biggrin.gif I am so new to these cars I really shouldn't be messing with stuff like that but I guess thats how you learn. With that said though the best way to learn is not with an airbag blowing up in your face. heheh I've been working on cars for years, I know just enough to get myself into trouble I guess.

I used your fix for my 94....Thanks a million!! I could not figure out for the life of me what the problem was. I had bought a reconditioned stereo to put it back to orignal.....done a reall good job of the wiring....all soldered...and it worked fine for a couple of days....until button by button it went south! You remedy saved not only my stereo but my sanity!!! Thanks again from the South of France!!
