Full Version: How far to push clutch pedal?

I heard something the other day that made me stop and think, and I can’t come up with a reason why it won’t work.  Here goes.  When driving a manual, I have always pushed the clutch all the way in when shifting gear.  Don’t know why, just have.  Someone asked me the other day if I push the pedal all the way in or just part way down when I shift.  I got to thinking…I tried shifting my car with only pushing the pedal half way down and it seems to work fine.  I am wondering how all of you guys do it?  I guess if all it takes to disengage the clutch is pushing it down half way, that’s all you need right?  Just a note, I do have play in the pedal when the clutch is all the way out.

Thanks
Chris

ok, first you should have a llittle play in the pedal when thr clutch is out, and yes it doesn't take the total throw of the pedal to disengage the clutch but it is safer to push it all the way in. this way you do not burn it out prematurely by not pushing it enough. You could find out how far you need to push it and set some sort of a pedal stop but as the clutch wears it will need adjustment. Also I see no advantage in this except for  the minimal time it would take to push it al the way to the floor. I actually think it would be faster to slam it to the floor and let it up. it is a positive stop that way and you are ensure good clutch disengagment. I mean how many timesdo you race that you would need it to be that accurate?
