Full Version: Exagerated HP claims

ok, I thought I posted this the other day but I must have not hit "post new topic"

Anyway, I was waiting for the NASCAR race yesterday and HP television was on. They had a stock '03 Cobra.

They dyno'd it bone stock and got 364RWHP, that is awesome

then they used a power programmer and got an amazing 48HP so that brings it up to 412RWHP

Then they went to a smaller pulley (I think 3.0") and it only got them 6 additional HP (so now they had 418RWHP)

then they went to an even smaler pulley (2.8") I think, and it got them 15HP above the 412 they had, so they ended up with 427RWHP. That is a ton of HP BUT that is nowhere near the HP claims (500HP+) that some Cobra owners are making.

I have seen Cobras dynod and the only ones with 500 or more have cams and head work and alot of other mods.

If this is a duplicate of my other post I am sorry I couldn't find the original post.

I just thought it was interesting.

That was HP TV right? I seen that episode to.The HPP suprised me with it's gains.A lot of power for sure but your right. Then the differing dyno's come into effect again. I think the show was closer to accurate.
Doug
I have been told by a bunch of 03 Cobra owners that all they did was a progammer and a poulley and they are well above 500HP.

I wasn't surprised by the programmer HP. anything supercharged will make a very large gain with some parameters changed.

427RWHP is still alot of power!

i saw horsepower TV dyno an LS1 once with some minor mods already done, and they came up with like 280 or somethin. that seemed real low. i dunno bout that show. great show, but they're numbers seem off sometimes. they're a hell of a lot better than those losers on popular hotrodding tv. haha, i hate those guys. stacy on trucks is the best if you ask me. only guy i know who can do a whole engine swap in one commercial break wink.gif
Doug
280RWHP is about right for an automatic non ram air LS1!!! I just thought it was interesting that is all.

Doug,

Do you think they were confused and meant 500 crank HP? Not all Mustang guys are the shiniest car in th junkyard tongue.gif

I've been to a few dyno days where lots of F-bodys were dynoed. I never saw a stock LS1 with less than 290 hp at the rear wheels and several people dynoed to get a base before modding. Saw a Cobra dyno at 390 and it was a stock supercharged brand new 03 model. -and it was a rather warm day too..........

I was gonna say something similar Formyla. When I dynoed my 99 A4 which just has a K&N filter, the free air mods, !TB and EGR mod, with 102xxx miles on it (needing new plugs/wires at the time), it dynoed at 301rwhp/320torque. That's quite a bit of diffence between that and 280rwhp that you state Doug.
Tyler
Again, unless the tests were run on the same dyno under the same conditions it may be that different. A dyno is a baseline for doing mods and seeing what mods help. My car may put down 300 rwhp on one dyno, then only do 275 on someone elses. Always go back to the same one when making changes to assure consistancy.

Like them or not Mustangs are american built rwd V8 sports cars. I would love to have a new Cobra cause they are wicked running cars.I dont think it's right to say anything bad about anyone else based on the type of car they drive. The same can be said for lots of people.

I guess what I'm trying to say is dont blame the car cause a bonehead purchased it. Boneheads buy lots of kinds of cars wink.gif

I state that 280 is ABOUT right for an automatic A4 LS1. We have been through this before. Some cars dyno higher than others and some lower but if you take the 305HP figure and subtract out a 15% drivetain loss for an automatic that would be about 270RWHP. I have personally seen LS1 dyno in the 280 range. I then again have seen some in the 300+ range, and Sue your car was modified ith the free ram air, the EGR, and throttle body, and K&N. i do not doubt anyones claims just said that 280 is ABOUT right. aloe 21HP isn't a huge difference, you can get a difference like that from dyno to dyno depensing on strap tension, fan velocity, outside temp/humidity.

anyway I was just telling what I saw on a TV show. and sure maybe the Cobra owners where talking about crank HP.

go there and check out the STOCK 03 Cobra!!! 355RWHP

There is an LS1 SS that puts down 315HP stock so it is an strong car but take a look. Look at some of the vette LS1 numbers one Z04 puts down 335RWHP, another puts down 353RWHP. Both where stock cars. I am just showing that on different days cars that are supposed to be the same can put down different numbers.

the ls1 that they showed put down 280 was already modded too like i said. So either the dyno was of a little or that was a reaaaaaall weak motor from the factory. 300 stock at the wheels seems to be the norm. these motors are always all over the place anyway though.
Doug
are you talking about the link I posted??? The cars with LS1's on that site are stock!

Doug
LT1Formula350
no.... i was talkin bout the TV show.
Doug
ah.. I see

WickedlyFast99TA
i had my 99 ta 6 spd ls1 dynoed today at 87 degrees and 55% humidity and pulled 312 rwhp and 324 rwtq and it is stock

One thing HPTV forgot was exhaust (if I remember correctly and they didnt even have a CAI on it did they?)

I friend of mine Tim P. from Cincy OH has a 03 with a custom tuned diablo chip, the most extreme pulley meaning both the crank and S/C pulleys where changed, that is where the HP goes crazy when you change the crank pulley also 18+ psi in most cases. He has headers full exhaust no cats I beleive, high flow mufflers and of course a CAI everything about the internals of the engine are BONE Stock and he made 490+RWHP. He picked up almost 25 HP when the car was near stock with the CAI and over 40 with the headers and exhaust. And the Diablo Sport chip was custom tuned on the dyno so it makes a huge difference and he has both the S/C and Crank pulley.

The one on HPTV had a crank pulley a Hypertech programmer (no where near as application specific as a custom burned dyno tuned chip) and was that it right?

Trust me love the Fbod but they are 500 hp stock motored (no internal mods) 03/04 Cobras out there. But they are MAXXING out the eaton S/C and pushing way more boost than the motor was ever designed to handle day to day. But hey if you blow it up it is just an excuse to dump a Pro Mod DSS block, cams, heads and a KENNE BELL twin screw S/C in it and make 700+ RWHP. cool.gif
Doug
Badbird the car you talk about has alot of mods I am talking about alot of people that claim just a pulley change and chip and are at 500HP. Don't get me wrong these are AWESOME cars. I will wait 5-7 years to see if they are still in one piece. History tells me no. Look at the supercoupe, and alot of other factory s/c cars but Ford did seem to do it right with all forged internals.

I am not just pickin gon the Ford because it is a ford I just have seen them dyno'd and everyone needed more that just a pulley mod and a chip to get to 500HP. That is all.

Thay are sick cars though, but a built LT1, or LS1 with a forged crank and pistons like my car, with a supercharger can put out way more than 500HP. I am at 450 with out a power added!

I am not boasting I know alot of people with LT1's and LS1's in the 600HP range with a supercharger or even more. My buddies 01 WS6 has no power adders and was built for him by keith black ( i think) and is at 552RWHP. It runs in the low 10's

He also has a 600 HP 69 Camaro and a 7 second drag bike! He owns an autobody. Some people have all the luck!

Sorry Doug misunderstood what you were saying. Yes with just a pulley change and a chip I think 500 RWHP would be unacheivable because even though the car is making more boost it has nothing to do with the spent exhaust gases (meaning the stock exhaust is just way to restrictive).

MAVERICK_TKR
thats really high i think that is the only stang i would by because of the power adder....other than that i hate those craps i mean slam a blower or a turbo on a f-body ls1 lets see what kind of numbers you'll pull on the dyno....biggrin.gif ph34r.gif
