Full Version: Our BRAND NEW VIN Decoder!!

After about 2 months of developement.. TFS is very proud to present to you our very own Vehicle Identification Number Decoder, or VIN Decoder, powered by our Database, which is a first to the F-body community. wink.gif

Right now, only Firebirds that were made in the year Formula was available can be decoded. As time goes on, and after the initial bugs are squashed, I will be adding all years the Firebird was made.

You can find each decoder specific for your generation of Formula by looking in the correct generation area at the main site. For those of you that have a 81 or newer Formula, GM added a few variables into the VIN.. including the Check Digit. After you get your results, the decoder will provide a link to the Check Digit page so you may decode this variable yourself to find out what it all means. I might code this out also to automate this for you in the future, but still.. I would like for you to know how it works out anyways... this info is courtesy of PHS.

I really hope that you enjoy this new feature of the site and that it helps you understand just alittle more about your Formula than you knew before.

Also, just would like to remind you as well that we offer a RPO Code Center powered by the DB as well... it is located just below the VIN decoder link in the generation area.

Enjoy!!

IF you experience any problems.. please reply to this topic so I can see what I can do to make this feature better for everyone...

I got an error message "Error locating 9" when I typed in my vin.

Here's what I typed for my 2001:

2G2FV229912123284

Nice feature on the site though!
formula90
ok. For some reason I dont have that one..

the eighth var is to show engine type..

for some reason I have

G for engine UPC LSI 5.7-liter V-8
K for engine UPC L36 3.8-liter V-6
9 for UPC LSI 5.7-liter V-8

************** fixed *******************

can someone confirm this with another year besides 2001?
WS6Freak
Do you think that could be because I might have a LS6 block? I heard that a few cars in 2001 and 2002 were made with the LS6 block....

I don't know how this would show up on the VIN though... sad.gif

of course it could.. and it very well could be a part of the vin... it has been in the past.. that 9 has plagued me forever.. I had a woman email me about that before saying that she has been to the end of the net and back and still cannot track down vin code 9. same position as yours... and i belive it was a 01 or 02 car... hmmm...

this is driving me crazy.. i have pulled all the books off my shelf and nothing on vin 9..

so.. as a quick fix.. i just added it to the DB as i edited my post above...

you see.. the LS1 powered cars came with ONLY 2 motors.. thats it.. in the second gen years the vin would include a letter for soecial cars like the anniversey edition and pace car and stuff.. this idea with the LS6 is a great idea...

are you telling me that you have not done the legwork to find out what is under your hood? Do you have a build sheet? Also, what about your RPO's? IF we can find out if you do in fact have that block.. then we may have answered the age old problem here... it sure would be nice if tis was the case....

will be waiting on your reply... smile.gif

Works like a Charm. Hats off to Formula90 and his marvelous coding job!

Nice addition to the site. Now I'll just have to get out my calculator to work on that check digit! biggrin.gif
WS6Freak
sad.gif sad.gif Hummmm...... I guess that's exactly what I'm telling you... didn't do the leg work. cool.gif sad.gif cool.gif

I don't have a build sheet, but I have a picture of my RPO sticker somewhere and I can send it to you...

I have a friend that used to have an '02 WS6 and he had the LS6 block. I'll check with him on his vin too (he traded his car in for an '02 C5 Z06).

WS6Freak- I believe that I may have some good news for you. I found the Window Sticker from my 2001 Z06, and the ninth (ENGINE) Digit is indeed a 9. The entire VIN for the Z06 is...

1G1YY12S915107402

it's also possible that all V8 engine blocks installed had a code of "9" in 2001, given that the LS6 is virtually the same block as the LS1 with altered camshaft and heads. Can anyone else with an '01 V8 confirm the use of "9" or "G" in the ninth digit of their vin?
formula90
krock... the ninth digit of the VIN... or the ninth position of the vin I should say is the check digit position.. we are asking about the specific vin code 9 that goes in the eighth position of the vin.. the eigth position of the vin is the engine code variable.. and what we would like confirmation on is... if a vin has a variable of 9 in the eighth position of the vin, does this mean that it has the LS6 block?

G for engine UPC LSI 5.7-liter V-8
K for engine UPC L36 3.8-liter V-6

and maybe..

9 for engine UPC LS6 5.7-liter V-8

I would be willing to bet the farm that this is the case... it should would be nice to get more feedback on this.. alot of people were waiting for this VIN decoder.. and now that is is here.. thereis noone that is willing to contribute to make it better... sad.gif

thanks guys so far for your help on this... one way or another we will get this knocked out!!!
KRockLS1
oh, I see. simple miscalculation in my part. It appears the the "S" denotes the LS6 on the '01 Z06, as opposed to the 9, which was probably the check digit. I stand corrected.
WS6Freak
I am checking this with my friend as you read this. He does have the LS6 block so I'm waiting for his reply on his 8th digit. If it's "9", I guess we're getting closer to a definite answer.....

Here's what other friend of mine wrote me:

I don't believe you will be able to derive anything from the VIN # on the fbody since the LS6 block wasn't part of any option offered, but more of a random thing. I've got the LS6 block in my '01 and the 8th digit is a "G" if that helps at all though

well now... perhaps you should call GM... maybe they can shed some light on the subject.

WORKED FOR ME!

I have a white 1997 Formula with Auto transmission, LT1 V8, T-tops

Here is my Vin... 2G2FV22P1V2206021

According to the vin decoder it was made in St. Therese Plant in Canada, It is a Pontiac division GM car, Formula, hatchback style 87, t-tops, Active manual seatbelts with dual airbags, LT1 5.7 liter V8, a 1997 year model, and Production number 206021

And the 9th check code part is too much trouble to find out! I really don't care what it means!

smile.gif hehehehe...

It didn't work for mine...until I realized that I was looking at the registration for my wife's Grand Am, which I also carry in my wallet. laugh.gif

It worked just fine for the correct VIN.

I got the build sheet for my 02 trans am emailed to me from pontiac dot com and there are some rpo codes on it that don't register when put in your system. If you all are interested I can forward a copy to one of you for review and use. Let me know. thanks
SassySue09
Go ahead and send me those RPO codes in a PM and I'll see if I can find out what they are for you and so we can possibly add them to the RPO decoder. Thanks
Rusty Suor
Do you mean I can give you my vin code and you can tell me how many were made option packages and what they included etc. This usually cots $45 elsewhere.

If so here is my vin#. 1997 Model year.

Thank you,

Rusty Suor

*VIN code deleted for safety reasons.
SassySue09
No sorry we can't get you that information, but if you go to the Main page and look down the left hand side you'll see a list of the different generations. If you click on the 4th Gen section, you can type in your VIN number and it'll tell you what the different parts of your VIN code mean.

Also for safety reasons I removed your VIN code from your post since if someone has that and they find out where you live and where your car is, they can use the VIN to possibly get a key made and then it would be Bye Bye Birdie.
